Christian Bale hanging up his Batman cape: report (omg!)

Actors Christian Bale (L) and Morgan Freeman attend a news conference for their upcoming film ?Batman: The Dark Knight? in Hong Kong, November 9, 2007. REUTERS/Herbert Tsang

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - "The Dark Knight Rises" may be Christian Bale's final performance as crime-fighting superhero Batman, the actor told the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

Set for release in July, the movie is Bale's third stint as Gotham's Caped Crusader for director Christopher Nolan, after "Batman Begins" (2005) and "The Dark Knight" (2008).

"I wrapped a few days ago, so that will be the last time I'm taking that cowl off," Bale told the newspaper during an interview in Beverly Hills. "I believe that the whole production wrapped yesterday, so it's all done. Everything's finished. It's me and Chris -- that will be the end of that Batman era.

The 37-year-old actor's comments, published late last week, weren't his first indication that he might have reached the end of the Batmobile ride. Bale told E! News in November one year ago that "unless Chris says different, this will be the last time I'm playing Batman."

Bale, who received an Oscar last year for his supporting performance in "The Fighter," next appears on the big screen in Zhang Yimou's China-set period drama "The Flowers of War." He'll also star in two films from "Tree of Life" director Terrence Malick.

Joining Bale in "The Dark Knight Rises" are Tom Hardy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Anne Hathaway, as Catwoman.

Film actors who have preceded Bale in the dual role of Batman and his alter ego, Bruce Wayne, include Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer and George Clooney.

The Sims 3: Pets PC review

The Sims 3 Pets review thumb

Let?s get one thing clear: I?m extremely fond of horses. If I were to list all of the animals in order of objective, intrinsic worth, I don?t think it would be arrogant of me to say that horses would certainly be at the top.

The Sims 3: Pets caters to unbridled hooflust in ways previous Sims pets expansions wouldn?t dare, introducing equine buddies to the already heaving assortment of available canine and feline companions. Dogs, cats and horses are now the three primary forms of petkind, while birds, fish, gerbiltypes and lizards steadfastly remain on the ?interactive furniture? side of animal husbandry.

You can teach parrots to talk, you can even teach them to swear.

Whether furry, hairy, scaly or feathered, pets integrate seamlessly into the life simulator. They can be inserted into new families from the outset, or adopted from other Sims or the adoption agency. And, because The Sims 3: Pets fills your town to the brim with wandering strays, your Sim can also befriend vagrant woofers, taking them off the streets and showering them in mind-smearing luxury.

Gone are the pet careers of The Sims 2, replaced by more realistic functions: dogs can hunt and dig for treasure. Cats can catch vermin. Horses can be ridden in races and made to jump over things for money. Riding itself is a skill Sims can learn, while hunting and other tricks can be taught and improved. The pets themselves can be controlled exactly as you would a human Sim, allowing you to placate their immediate desires (typically: sniffing and eating things) or attend to their needs without the interaction of a human Sim. And, just as with human Sims, wish fulfilment grants rewards ? such as the ability to vomit at will.

Ride you horse to the shops, like you're in a music video or something.

The animations and animal vocalisations, are of an incredibly high standard ? pumping immense, wet-nosed character and playful personalities into every pet. You?ll want to crawl into your monitor to stroke the things, instead of stoically resigning yourself to proxy in-game cuddles and indirect cooing. Animals age and expire, too, flinging Sims into depressions of such crippling magnitude that, much like real life, you wonder if it?s ever worth forming an emotional bond with a living creature ever again. But don?t worry, you?ll find some consolation in the customisation options in the pet creation suite. Maybe.

The pets expansions for the Sims have traditionally been the most, well, expansive, introducing players to a new emotional vocabulary through the unconditional and universally appreciated love of captive animals. The Sims 3: Pets is the most balanced of these expansions ? more pragmatic than the wackiness of The Sims 2 superstar mutts, and? well, I doubt you even remember the awful state of The Sims 1?s autistic, grid-based dogs. It?s the only Sims expansion I?d ever insist upon, and a must for Sims 3 owners.

Verdict

Set to doom a generation of pony-mad girls. Perfect if you have love in your heart and Sims 3 on your Steam account.

Benefits Derived from Having Pets | LoopLane? | One World ...

Whether, it?s a cat, a dog, a bird or an iguana, having a pet brings health and mental benefits to its owners. Pets are not just there to provide companionship and loyalty to their owners but a whole slew of other benefits as well. Keeping a pet can help the owner become more active with exercise and physical activities. It also prevents them from getting sick or helps them feel better when they are sick, lowers down their blood pressures and prevents owners from experiencing depressions and other mental illnesses.

Having pets keep their owners fit. Pet owners, especially those who own dogs, would find themselves embracing the active lifestyle for their pet?s health. As they need to give their pets a walk or just jog with their beloved critters, they too find themselves engaged in this physical activity. Not only is the physical activity good for their pets but they also get to spend quality time with their beloved animals.

Having pets also prevent their owners from getting sick. Pet owners have a higher chance of not getting sick from those that do not own pets. From choosing an active lifestyle for them and their pets, owners are faced with the truth that they have to also choose and practice better eating habits for themselves and their pets. By eating healthier alternatives, they get the needed daily intake of vitamins and minerals they need to function well and do their work.

Pets also help their owner recover from their sickness. Pet therapy is now becoming a practice for pet owners and common patients in getting better from their sickness. Although not to be treated as an alternative medicine and medical procedures, pet owners and patients feel better if they are visited by a therapy animal.

Having a pet also helps lower blood cholesterol. While it is true that nothing can replace the benefits of prescribed medicine in lowering the blood pressure of people, having a pet lowers blood pressure caused by stress and tension that they often experience in their daily lives which can be considered a natural way of controlling one?s blood pressure.

Having a pet reduces the chances of depression and mental illnesses. Your pet is there for many reasons, but the most common is for companionship. Having a pet takes away a person?s loneliness and allows them to break free from their shells and interact with people.

Pet owners do not only enjoy the company of their pets. They also receive benefits regarding their physical and mental health.

Officials: NATO chopppers kill Pakistani troops

NATO helicopters from Afghanistan intruded into northwest Pakistan and attacked a military check post near the border on Saturday, killing up to 25 troops and wounding 14, Pakistani military officials told Reuters.

A senior Pakistani military officer said efforts were under way to bring the bodies to the headquarters of Mohmand tribal region from their post located on hilltops near the Afghan border.

"The latest attack by NATO forces on our post would have serious repercussions as they without any reason attacked on our post and killed soldiers asleep," he said, requesting anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media.

The Associated Press reported that Pakistan state TV had reported the same death toll, following earlier conflicting reports.

A Pakistani military spokesman confirmed the pre-dawn attack on the Salala post in the tribal region of Mohmand and said casualties had been reported, but gave no details.

"NATO helicopters carried out an unprovoked and indiscriminate firing on a Pakistani check post in Mohmand agency, casualties have been reported and details are awaited," the spokesman told Reuters.

Pakistan's Prime Minister Yousaf Gilani strongly denounced the attack, according to a message on Twitter by Radio Pakistan.

The governor of Pakistan's northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province criticized the incident, calling it "an attack on Pakistani sovereignty."

NATO supplies suspended
Journalist Ahmad Mukhtar said in a message on Twitter that Pakistan was suspending NATO's truck supplies that travel through Pakistan to Afghanistan.

Reuters, citing Pakistani officials, later reported that trucks and fuel tankers were stopped at Jamrud town in the Khyber tribal region near the city of Peshawar, hours after the raid.

"We have halted the supplies and some 40 tankers and trucks have been returned from the check post in Jamrud," Mutahir Zeb, a senior government official, told Reuters.

Another official said the supplies had been stopped for security reasons.

Colonel Gary Kolb, spokesman for the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force in Kabul, said the helicopters were taking part in a strike that was coordinated effort with ISAF, Pakistani military and the Pakistani border authorities, NBC News reported.

He said they had responded to small arms fire. Asked to confirm that it was retaliatory, he said yes.

ISAF was working on both paper and video statements, but was still determining the circumstances.

"This has the highest priority to ensure that we get all the facts straight," Kolb said.

He noted that even if some of supply routes through Pakistan were closed, there were "contingencies built into the system" to deal with these types of disruptions.

The Salala check post, about 1.5 miles from the Afghan border, was recently set up by the Pakistan army to stop Taliban militants holed up in Afghanistan from crossing the border and staging attacks, officials told The Associated Press.

The attack took place around 2 a.m. local time in the Baizai area of Mohmand, where Pakistani troops are engaged in fighting Taliban militants.

Various unnamed officials had previous put the death toll at between seven and 13.

A spokesman for the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force in Kabul said the coalition there was aware of "an incident."

The attack comes as relations between the United States and Pakistan, its ally in the war on terror, are already strained following the killing of al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden by U.S. special forces in a secret raid on the Pakistani garrison town of Abbottabad in May.

U.S. helicopters accidentally killed two Pakistani soldiers near the border last year, prompting Pakistan to temporarily close the border to supplies shipped through the country to NATO troops in Afghanistan.

Avoid Investing In Hogs This Thanksgiving

It's been quite a ride for Harley-Davidson, Inc. (NYSE:HOG) investors this year. The stock?has?been?up?and down this year, but it has soared 240% since the March 6, 2009 bottom of slightly over $8 per share. Margin pressures are now?putting the brakes on the stock. Has the recent?slowdown finally broken Harley's?momentum, or is this just?a bump in the road? (For more, read Earnings: Quality Means Everything.)

Investopedia Markets: Explore the best one-stop source for financial news, quotes and insights.

Smooth Ride
As the market leader in heavyweight motorcycles, Harley-Davidson is in good financial condition thanks?in large part to its?significant brand power. Third quarter earnings surged from $88.8 million in the third quarter of 2010 to $183.6 million last quarter. Solid revenues and?a very favorable temporary tax rate of 30.4% padded earnings. Global motorcycle?and parts sales?increased 13% to $1.23 billion.?Harley's debt-to-asset ratio has steadily improved sequentially and operating cash flows remain strong.

The company has made significant?inroads into global markets. Retail sales climbed 1.8% in the Asia Pacific region last quarter. It is?concerning that demand?in Japan still has not recovered following the tsunami earlier this year, and a large percentage of?international sales derive from troubled Europe.

Margin?Miss
Global growth fears and Harley's transformation into a smaller manufacturer have?pushed the stock into the red; since July 15, HOG is down 17%. Inventories are?near multi-year lows as a result of supply constraints. The restructuring underway?at Harley's York manufacturing facility?has caused?tangible disruptions and margin pressures, particularly for higher-priced Touring and Softail lines. Harley?fell short?on both margins and margin guidance during the third quarter,?as?lower productivity and?inefficiencies were induced by the?restructuring.?Manufacturing?constraints?will continue to be felt during the fourth quarter, and inefficiencies are expected to persist?through 2013.?

Currency impacts squeezed margins as well last quarter. Harley revalues foreign assets?at end of quarter currency exchange rates. If exchange rates are lower at?the end of the?reporting period?(as the euro, Australian dollar and Brazilian real were last quarter), the impact is negative. Instability in?Europe, and for the euro,?adds a?big currency risk premium to Harley's significant?European operations. (To learn more about the effect currency can have on a corporation, see Corporate Currency Risks Explained.)

Higher prices for?steel, rubber and other?materials?that go into the production process are another major concern. Will?Harley be able to?pass along those costs to buyers? 2012 models are expected to be priced 1% higher on average. If gas prices remain very high, will the allure of the Harley brand prevent consumers from trading down to lower cost,?more fuel efficient, lighter bikes made by Honda Motor Co., LTD. (NYSE:HMC), Suzuki or Yamaha? Higher gas prices could?push more?buyers toward the growing?electric bike market. On October 26, diversified vehicle producer Polaris Industries Inc. (NYSE:PII) announced a minority investment in electric motorcycle?maker Brammo Inc.?Polaris says the electric motorcycle market is "rapidly growing."

The Bottom Line
There are a lot of near-term obstacles that may dent Harley's stock, yet?there's still a lot to like. The company is very profitable and is growing its international footprint in emerging markets. Synergies and?assembly proficiencies from the York restructuring will provide long-term benefits. The 1.4% dividend yield is a nice feature as well.?

And, the?Harley brand remains a status symbol that buyers want. But there are?long-term risks to the brand. The company's?demographic continues to get older. Younger buyers, that may not appreciate the nostalgia of owning a Harley as much as the older generation,?are increasingly demanding more fuel efficient, cost effective vehicles. Harley-Davidson could be beat?off the line?by lower cost, more manageable Japanese vehicles, just as muscle cars made by General Motors Company (NYSE:GM) and Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F)?were. Near-term margin pressures, capacity constraints and rising?input costs?weigh heavily on?the stock. Now might not be the time to ride high on HOG. (For more on the effect rising fuel cost have had on the market, read 4 Ways Rising Fuel Costs Influence The Auto Industry.)

Weinstein desires to become recognized film brand (omg!)

Harvey Weinstein, film producer and co-chairman of The Weinstein Company, is shown in New York on Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2011. Weinstein's latest films include "The Artist," and "My Week with Marilyn," starring Michelle Williams as Marilyn Monroe. (AP Photo/John Carucci)

NEW YORK (AP) ? While Harvey Weinstein has no plans to roar like the MGM lion before each of his movies, the Oscar-winning producer wants to turn the film studio bearing his family's name into a recognizable brand. His wish list includes branding on par with Facebook's F, Twitter's T and Apple's, well, apple.

While he says he will continue to use the "the black and white logo that looks like it's from high school in 1954," he's letting his films this week do the talking ? or at least one of them.

Already in theaters is "My Week with Marilyn," starring two-time Oscar nominee Michelle Williams as Marilyn Monroe. It's based on the writings of Colin Clark, who spent a week with the iconic actress in 1957 while she was filming "The Prince and the Showgirl" in the United Kingdom.

Weinstein, who heads The Weinstein Co. with his brother, explained the subject matter's appeal to him.

"I wanted to be that 23-year old boy and spend a week with Marilyn Monroe and go skinny-dipping," Weinstein said Wednesday. "Haven't we all dreamed of being with someone that gorgeous?"

But this is not another Monroe biopic. Weinstein calls it "a snapshot movie about one episode in her life." He equates the film's tone with his 2010 Oscar winner for best picture, "The King's Speech," about a speech therapist who helps King George VI.

With production credits in such Broadway hits as "Billy Elliot," ''The Producers" and "God of Carnage," Weinstein always has his eyes on Broadway. He admits it's a dream to bring "My Week with Marilyn" to the great stage in "five to 10 years." And when that happens, he has his heart set on seeing Monroe played by singer Katy Perry, whom he met while taking his daughters to the annual Jingle Ball concert at Madison Square Garden last year.

"I think Katy would be perfect to play Marilyn Monroe," Weinstein said, adding: "She would knock it out of the universe."

Weinstein's other new film, "The Artist," which comes out Friday, is a modern homage to the silent film era and was the darling of the Cannes and Toronto International film festivals. It was shot in black and white using the original 4:3 aspect ratio.

While the film is not your typical studio release, Weinstein doesn't concern himself with such things.

"With a script or a book I try to do what would appeal to me," he says proudly. "I'm not here to do the mainstream movies."

And the results are promising. Weinstein likes the buzz both films are getting, but his source isn't what you'd expect: It's the RottenTomatoes.com website, which compiles reviews and assigns percentage scores based on the average.

"I just go to Rotten Tomatoes to check on who's writing, and I read some of the reviews on Rotten Tomatoes," he said. "I like the site. It's fun. I like the interviews on the site."

Weinstein was proud to report Wednesday the Monroe film was at 85 percent. And "The Artist" was trending a bit higher, based on reviews going back to April, when it played at Cannes.

"I wish I could brand the movies in a way so they would just look at the page and trust me rather than a critic or anything else," Weinstein said.

Weinstein has been seeking advice from firms like Christian Dior and Louis Vuitton about how consumers recognize their products. Oddly enough, he's not expecting to recreate that Columbia Pictures lady with the torch. The iconic Leo the Lion has become synonymous with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Weinstein says that while the lion is a powerful symbol, he's not seeking that type of message. Nor is he shy about the brand.

"The thing about MGM and why it doesn't work at the end of the day is because they would make great musicals and then they would make Andy Hardy movies, or they would make Tarzan movies, so you never know what you got at MGM.

"I'm pretty consistent, at least on my side of the fence, with making a certain, you know, they call it artistic, it's really not, but something that is just a little more literary in its approach."

Baltimore sacks 49ers QB nine times, gives coach John Harbaugh 16-6 win over brother Jim

By DAVID GINSBURG

updated 12:37 a.m. ET Nov. 25, 2011

BALTIMORE - John Harbaugh could have gloated. He could have bragged.

Instead, the Baltimore Ravens coach played the role of gracious big brother after he bested Jim Harbaugh and the San Francisco 49ers 16-6 Thursday night in the first NFL game featuring brothers as opposing head coaches.

The Ravens (8-3) tied a franchise record with nine sacks to end San Francisco's eight-game winning streak.

"To the 49ers and to my brother, I can't tell you enough how proud I am of him and the job he's done building that football team," John said of Jim, a rookie NFL coach. "That's a football team. The way they're built, it's pretty hard to figure out a way to beat them."

John, 49, and Jim, 47, grew up dueling each other in all sorts of games. This, however, was the first time their sibling rivalry was displayed on a national stage.

During the final minute, John got a Gatorade bath from his players ? twice. After the game ended, the brothers hugged at midfield.

"There's a saying that says, 'As iron sharpens iron, so does one man sharpen another,'" Jim said. "And I have to say my brother John is the sharpest iron I've ever encountered in my life."

The Ravens chased, hindered and battered 49ers quarterback Alex Smith for much of the night despite playing without middle linebacker Ray Lewis, the team's leading tackler and spiritual leader. Lewis was inactive for a second straight game with a foot injury.

Smith completed 15 of 24 passes for 140 yards and an interception, and San Francisco (9-2) was held without a touchdown for the first time this season. Smith never could get into a rhythm against an aggressive defense that rarely let him set up in the pocket.

"It's tough to get ready for a defense like that in a short week. They do so many things," he said. "They're a great front. At home with the crowd noise, they were teeing off."

Terrell Suggs had three sacks for first-place Baltimore, which moved a half-game ahead of the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC North.

"That's always the game plan, to get after the quarterback, but I think the No. 1 game plan was to win the Harbaugh Bowl," Suggs said. "Coach tried to downplay it ? act like it's not me against my brother, this is the Ravens vs. the 49ers and let's get win No. 8 and make sure our destiny is in our own hands ? but it was really important to him. We as a team went out there and really wanted to win for him."

Baltimore broke a 6-6 tie with a 76-yard, 16-play drive that lasted more than 7? minutes and ended with an 8-yard touchdown pass from Joe Flacco to tight end Dennis Pitta with 14:56 left. Flacco went 4 for 4 for 34 yards and a touchdown on third down during the drive.

"When you have that kind of game plan ? your line being so efficient on third downs ? you have to come through," Flacco said.

Click for related content

Billy Cundiff wrapped up the scoring with his third field goal, a 39-yarder with 4:16 remaining.

In a game dominated by both defenses, Flacco finished 15 for 23 for 161 yards and Ray Rice ran for 59 yards on 21 carries.

The 49ers began the third quarter with a 13-play drive that lasted 7? minutes and produced a 52-yard field goal by David Akers for a 6-6 tie. The key play was an 18-yard completion from Smith to Michael Crabtree on a third-and-17 from the San Francisco 26.

The Ravens responded with their lone touchdown drive of the game.

Baltimore sacked Smith four times in the first half and picked off a pass in taking a 6-3 lead.

The Ravens took the opening kickoff and moved 55 yards ? 38 of them on a pair of Flacco-to-Anquan Boldin completions ? before Cundiff kicked a 39-yard field goal.

Late in the first quarter, a 20-yard completion from Smith to tight end Vernon Davis set up a 45-yard field goal by Akers.

The 49ers blew a chance to take the lead when Frank Gore was penalized for a chop block on a 75-yard touchdown pass from Smith to Ted Ginn, who got behind Cary Williams deep down the middle.

Neither team had much luck moving the ball until San Francisco's Tarell Brown was called for pass interference on a long pass to Torrey Smith. The 50-yard penalty put the ball at the 15, and although the Ravens turned it into a first-and-goal at the 4, they had to settle for a 23-yard field goal with 2:51 left in the half.

Notes: Baltimore has won all six home games this season and 15 of 16. ... Gore finished with 39 yards on 14 carries. ... Although the Ravens had a first-and-goal at the 4 in second quarter, the 49ers held and kept intact their distinction of not allowing a TD rushing all season. ... Lee Evans had a catch for the Ravens, his first reception since Week 2 after missing seven games with an ankle injury.

"Le Havre" is a small bit of movie magic, a story that plays more as a fable even as it deals with something as topical as immigration.

The film is especially comforting if you love old movies, as Kaurismaki does.

Does Kaurismaki believe in his own fairy tale? The movie, a humble delight, suggests the answer is yes.

An exceeding droll comedy from Finnish master Aki Kaurismaki, whose dark worldview is balanced by a deep empathy for his blue-collar characters.

Kaurism?ki can almost restore your hope in humanity.

Kaurismaki dives into French film culture in 'Le Havre'

You almost become a citizen of Le Havre, watching this film and rejoicing at the end as two newfound, unexpected friends share a drink.

It's a straightforward yet completely artificial scenario, with welcome overtones of Italian Neo-Realism.

Unlike the director's typical hero, Wilms's spare performance conveys confidence rather than defeat. He and the kid warm the heart, thawing Kaurism?ki's usual icy aplomb.

Heart-wrenching but ultimately inspirational.

Le Havre is not the filmmaker's best work (see La Vie de Boh?me for that), but no matter the storm, we should be grateful to dock in this port.

An easygoing story of human relationships with a sharp political comment about European immigration.

So breezy that once the film ends, it simply drifts away

If the story outline seems simple, it is; this movie is all about attitude and style. The shabby-genteel hero, who has a keen sense of irony, and the people who help him...

Why One Pepper-Spraying Cop Image Dominates

When U.C. Davis police officer Lt. John Pike pepper-sprayed a line of student protesters last Friday, his actions were recorded in replicate. Dozens of cameras captured video and still images, and soon swarms of photographs seeped across the internet. If there was ever a more-recorded single event in history, I am not aware of it.

Yet, from the cloud of pepper-spray photographs, one has come to dominate. It is this image, taken by Davis psychology student Louise Macabitas, from the west side of the blocked path:

This is the photo that birthed the Pepperspray Cop meme. After spending time looking at this and dozens of similar captures, I think I know why.

  • A low perspective elevates Pike?s head above the crowd, leaving an indelible impression of dominance & authority.
  • Pike is in mid-stride, adding motion to a still image, and the outward-pointed foot puts the Casual in the ?casually pepper-spray everything? meme.
  • Pike?s face is visible, more so than in images taken from a higher angle.
  • The spray itself is unmistakable in silhouette.
  • Every person is identifiable as either Police, Onlooker, or Protester. The story tells itself.
  • See that police officer back-right? His stance, and his high head, reinforce a detached arrogance on the part of the police.
  • The expressions of the onlookers- at least not those in the standing paparazzi- convey a mix of surprise and disbelief.

Leaving politics and sociology aside, the image compels on its own merits.?It is at once both complex and simple. There is a lot to look at, but each element adds into the same narrative. As Megan Garber?notes:

?the photo?s narrative is built into its imagery. It depicts not just a scene, but a story. It requires of viewers very little background knowledge; even more significantly, it requires of them very few political convictions.

A remarkable image. I hope that eventually Ms. Macabitas receives due recognition for it.

Pakistan fills vacant U.S. envoy position (Reuters)

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) ? Moving quickly to fill a vacant ambassadorial post in Washington left by the resignation of Husain Haqqani, Pakistan unexpectedly appointed a former information minister and outspoken human rights campaigner as its new envoy.

"The prime minister is pleased to appoint Sherry Rehman as the new ambassador to the United States," said spokesman for the Prime Minister's office, Akram Shaheedi.

Haqqani resigned on Tuesday, days after a Pakistani-American businessman accused him of being behind a memo that accused the Pakistani military of plotting a coup in May.

Tension between Pakistan's civilian government and military has bedevilled the nuclear-armed South Asian country for almost its entire existence, with the military ruling the country for more than half of its 64-year history after a series of coups.

Sarkozy to press Merkel on ECB after bond fiasco (Reuters)

PARIS/BERLIN (Reuters) ? French President Nicolas Sarkozy will press German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Thursday to let the European Central Bank act decisively to rescue the euro zone from a deepening sovereign debt crisis now hitting Germany.

French officials hope Berlin will relent in its opposition to a greater crisis-fighting role for the ECB after Germany itself suffered a failed bond auction on Wednesday, highlighting how investors are now shunning even Europe's safest haven.

"There is urgency (for ECB intervention). We will talk about it today in Strasbourg," French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe said on France Inter radio, hours before the French, German and Italian leaders were due to meet in the eastern French city.

"I think and hope that the thinking will evolve and that the ECB should play an essential role to re-establish confidence," Juppe said.

Sarkozy took a step toward Merkel this week by agreeing to amend the European Union's treaty to permit intrusive powers to change national budgets in euro area countries that go off the rails. But the German leader has so far maintained her line that the treaty forbids the ECB from acting as lender of last resort to buy euro zone bonds.

With contagion spreading fast, a majority of 20 leading economists polled by Reuters predicted that the euro zone was unlikely to survive the crisis in its current form, with some envisaging a "core" group that would exclude Greece.

In signs of public resistance to austerity in the currency area's troubled south, riot police clashed with workers at Greece's biggest power producer protesting against a new property tax, and Portuguese workers staged a one-day general strike.

Wednesday's auction, in which the German debt agency found no buyers for half of a 6 billion euro 10-year bond offering at a record low 2.0 percent interest rate, sent Bund futures down to their lowest level in nearly a month on Thursday as confidence in German debt continued to be shaken.

Bond investors are effectively on strike, interbank lending to euro area banks is freezing up, ever more banks are dependent on the ECB for funding, and depositors are withdrawing increasing amounts from southern European banks.

Investors are also unnerved by reports that Belgium is leaning on France to pay more into emergency support for failed lender Dexia under a 90-billion-euro ($120-billion) rescue deal that had appeared done and dusted.

A special report by Fitch Ratings suggested France had limited room left to absorb shocks to its finances, such as a new downturn in growth or support for banks, without endangering its triple-A credit status.

Merkel, Sarkozy and new Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti were also expected to discuss the reforms planned by Italy's new government of technocrats marking Rome's return to grace in Europe after the era of scandal-plagued former Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi, who resigned this month.

The German bond auction pushed the cost of borrowing over 10 years for the bloc's paymaster above those for the United States for the first time since October.

"It is a complete and utter disaster," said Marc Ostwald, strategist at Monument Securities in London.

GERMAN EXPOSURE

Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble's spokesman said the auction did not mean the government had refinancing problems and few on financial markets disagreed. Some analysts said Berlin just needed to offer a more attractive yield.

But it was a sign that, as the bloc's paymaster, Germany may face creeping pressure as the crisis continues to deepen. One senior ratings agency official said it could give Berlin cause to re-examine its refusal to embrace a broader solution.

"It's quite telling that there has been upward pressure on yields in Germany - it might begin to change perceptions," David Beers of Standard & Poor's told a conference in Dublin.

Merkel showed no sign on Wednesday of bending to calls, most notably from France, to allow the ECB to act more decisively.

In a forceful speech to the Bundestag, the lower house of the German parliament, she warned against fiddling with the bank's strict inflation-fighting mandate. She also hit back at proposals from the European Commission on joint euro zone bond issuance, calling them "extraordinarily inappropriate."

Merkel has said the EU treaty bars the ECB from acting as a lender of last resort and printing money to buy government debt. She rejected joint "euro bonds," dismissed a proposal to mutualise the euro zone's debt stock, and rebuffed attempts to allow the bloc's rescue fund to borrow from the ECB or the IMF.

Yet at the same time, she has declared that the only answer to the crisis was "more Europe" and won endorsement from her party to press for a fully fledged European political union based around the euro zone.

The borrowing costs of almost all euro zone states, even those previously seen as safe such as France, Austria and the Netherlands, have spiked in the last two weeks as panicky investors dumped paper no longer seen as risk-free.

"Bunds are starting to lose their appeal because markets have to believe the euro bonds story and Germany is very close to starting, essentially, to guarantee the debt of other countries," said Achilleas Georgolopoulos, strategist at Lloyds Bank in London.

The crux of an acceleration of the crisis in the past month is Italian bond yields' jump to levels around 7 percent widely seen as unbearable in the long term, despite intervention by the European Central Bank to buy limited quantities.

STABILITY BOND

Bank of England policymaker David Miles said in an interview broadcast on ITV late on Wednesday there is a risk that one of the euro zone's 17 member states could leave the currency bloc.

"I don't think any of us can feel confident one way or another about whether all the countries that are currently in the euro zone will still be in it," he said.

In a Reuters poll conducted over the last 10 days, 14 out of 20 prominent academics, former policymakers and independent thinkers agreed the euro zone's make-up would change.

A new "core" euro zone with fewer members received qualified backing from 10 economists as a possible solution, with seven of them saying Greece should be excluded from it.

"The euro zone can and should survive, but it will not survive on the current trajectory," said Jeffrey Sachs, Director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University in New York.

With time running out for politicians to forge a crisis plan that is seen as credible by the markets, the European Commission presented a study on Wednesday of joint euro zone bonds as a way to stabilize debt markets.

European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso unveiled proposals for much more intrusive oversight of euro zone countries' budgets and efforts to meet macroeconomic targets, and set out the options for introducing common euro zone bonds.

Antifreeze toxicity in pets | World Veterinary Association

Source:
In this podcast, we discuss how small amounts of antifreeze can cause big problems for our pets.

Antifreeze is a key component in keeping our cars running smoothly, particularly in these colder winter months, but just a little leaked or spilled antifreeze can cause big problems for our pets. Just one teaspoon can be lethal for a 10 pound cat, and about 5 teaspoons can be deadly for a large dog.

In this podcast, Dr. Camille DeClementi, a board-certified veterinary toxicologist with the ASPCA, talks about antifreeze toxicity in pets.

WFP says more than 1 million Zimbabweans need food aid (Reuters)

HARARE (Reuters) ? More than a million people in Zimbabwe will require food aid between now and March 2012, a United Nations agency said Monday, despite recent improvements in the country's grain production.

The southern African country has struggled to feed itself since 2000, when President Robert Mugabe began a drive to seize white-owned farms to resettle landless blacks, leading to a sharp fall in agricultural output.

Production of the staple maize started to recover after Mugabe formed a unity government with his rival, Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, and rose from less than 500,000 tonnes in 2007-8 to 1.45 million tonnes in the 2010/11 season.

Production is still below the 2 million tonnes a year the country needs to be self-sufficient.

The UN World Food Program (WFP) said it was facing a $42 million funding shortfall for food aid it planned to provide to vulnerable households in Zimbabwe's hardest-hit areas until the start of the harvest season in March.

A recent study by the Zimbabwean government, UN agencies and other donor organizations had shown that 12 percent of the rural population would not be able to feed itself adequately through the lean season, the WFP said in a statement.

"Most at risk are low-income families hit by failed harvests, and households with orphans and vulnerable children," WFP said. "Although food is generally available in many rural areas, it is too expensive for those with limited resources."

In new quantum-dot LED design, researchers turn troublesome molecules to their advantage

ScienceDaily (Nov. 15, 2011) ? By nestling quantum dots in an insulating egg-crate structure, researchers at the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) have demonstrated a robust new architecture for quantum-dot light-emitting devices (QD-LEDs).

Quantum dots are very tiny crystals that glow with bright, rich colors when stimulated by an electric current. QD-LEDs are expected to find applications in television and computer screens, general light sources, and lasers.

Previous work in the field had been complicated by organic molecules called ligands that dangle from the surface of the quantum dots. The ligands play an essential role in quantum dot formation, but they can cause functional problems later on.

Thanks to an inventive change in technique devised by the Harvard team, the once-troublesome ligands can now be used to build a more versatile QD-LED structure. The new single-layer design, described in the journal Advanced Materials, can withstand the use of chemical treatments to optimize the device's performance for diverse applications.

"With quantum dots, the chemical environment that's optimal for growth is usually not the environment that's optimal for function," says co-principal investigator Venkatesh Narayanamurti, Benjamin Peirce Professor of Technology and Public Policy at SEAS.

The quantum dots, each only 6 nanometers in diameter, are grown in a solution that glows strikingly under a black light.

The solution of quantum dots can be deposited onto the surface of the electrodes using a range of techniques, but according to lead author Edward Likovich (A.B. '06, S.M. '08, Ph.D. '11), who conducted the research as a doctoral candidate in applied physics at SEAS, "That's when it gets complicated."

"The core of the dots is a perfect lattice of semiconductor material, but on the exterior it's a lot messier," he says. "The dots are coated with ligands, long organic chains that are necessary for precise synthesis of the dots in solution. But once you deposit the quantum dots onto the electrode surface, these same ligands make many of the typical device processing steps very difficult."

The ligands can interfere with current conduction, and attempts to modify them can cause the quantum dots to fuse together, destroying the properties that make them useful. Organic molecules can also degrade over time when exposed to UV rays.

Researchers would like to be able to use those ligands to produce the quantum dots in solution, while minimizing the negative impact of the ligands on current conduction.

"The QD technologies that have been developed so far are these big, thick, multilayer devices," says co-author Rafael Jaramillo, a Ziff Environmental Fellow at the Harvard University Center for the Environment. Jaramillo works in the lab of Shriram Ramanathan, Associate Professor of Materials Science at SEAS.

"Until now, those multiple layers have been essential for producing enough light, but they don't allow much control over current conduction or flexibility in terms of chemical treatments. A thin, monolayer film of quantum dots is of tremendous interest in this field, because it enables so many new applications."

The new QD-LED resembles a sandwich, with a single active layer of quantum dots nestled in insulation and trapped between two ceramic electrodes. To create light, current must be funneled through the quantum dots, but the dots also have to be kept apart from one another in order to function.

In an early design, the path of least resistance was between the quantum dots, so the electric current bypassed the dots and produced no light.

Abandoning the traditional evaporation technique they had been using to apply insulation to the device, the researchers instead used atomic layer deposition (ALD) -- a technique that involves jets of water. ALD takes advantage of the water-resistant ligands on the quantum dots, so when the aluminum oxide insulation is applied to the surface, it selectively fills the gaps between the dots, producing a flat surface on the top.

The new structure allows more effective control over the flow of electrical current.

"Exploiting these hydrophobic ligands allowed us to insulate the interstices between the quantum dots, essentially creating a structure that acts as an egg crate for quantum dots," says co-author Kasey Russell (A.B. '02, Ph.D. '09), a postdoctoral fellow at SEAS. "The benefit is that we can funnel current directly through the quantum dots despite having only a single layer of them, and because we have that single layer, we can apply new chemical treatments to it, moving forward."

Through Harvard's Office of Technology Development, Likovich and his colleagues have applied for a provisional patent on the device. Beyond the possible applications in computer and TV displays, lights, and lasers, the technology could one day be used in field-effect transistors or solar cells.

The research was supported by the Harvard University Center for the Environment; the Nanoscale Science and Engineering Center at Harvard, which is funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF); and the use of facilities at the Harvard University Center for Nanoscale Systems, a member of the NSF-supported National Nanotechnology Infrastructure Network.

Dutch Supreme Court reduces terrorist's sentence (AP)

AMSTERDAM ? The Netherlands' Supreme Court Tuesday slightly reduced the sentence of an Islamic radical convicted of recruiting and indoctrinating young Muslims for his group that plotted terrorist attacks.

The court found that Nouriddin el Fahtni's eight-year sentence was longer than allowed by law and reduced it to seven years and four months.

El Fahtni's group is linked with the so-called "Hofstad" group that includes figures such as Mohammed Bouyeri, who is serving a life sentence for the 2004 murder of Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh.

El Fahtni had a loaded machine gun when he was arrested in June 2005.

Separately, the court sent the case of El Fahtni's ex-wife Soumaya Sahla back to the appeals court. The high court ruled Tuesday that Sahla's lawyers should have been allowed more access to records of phone calls she made on a line tapped by the secret service.

One call played a key role in her conviction and four-year sentence: she tried to get her sister, who worked at a pharmacy, to give her the home addresses of Dutch politicians. Allegedly she intended to supply the addresses to other group members who planned attacks.

El-Fahtni has also used the name Nouradine al Fatmi and other variations of the names.

(This version CORRECTS spelling of name.)

Turkey cancels oil search plans in Syria (AP)

ANKARA, Turkey ? Turkey on Tuesday canceled plans for oil exploration in Syria, while also threatening to cut electricity supplies after a spate of attacks by supporters of Syrian President Bashar Assad on its diplomatic missions,

Energy Minister Taner Yildiz announced that Turkey had shelved plans for Turkey's petroleum company, TPAO, to jointly explore oil with Syria's state oil company in six wells within Syria. Yildiz also threatened that Turkey could review supplies of electricity to the troubled country if tensions continue.

"Right now, we are providing electricity (to Syria)," Yildiz said. "If (Syria) continues on this course, then we might have to reconsider these decisions."

Turkey's Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan slammed Assad for his brutal crackdown on opponents and attacks by his supporters on Turkish diplomatic missions on Saturday.

Turkey no longer has confidence in the Syrian regime, Erdogan said, warning Assad that his brutal crackdown on opponents threatens to place him on a list of leaders who "feed on blood."

Erdogan also urged Assad to punish those responsible for attacks on Turkish diplomatic missions in Syria.

Addressing Assad disrespectfully by his first name, Erdogan said: "Bashar, you who have thousands of people in jail, must find those who attacked the Turkish flag and punish them," in reference to burning of the Turkish flag in Saturday's attack on the Turkish consulate in the Syrian city of Latakia.

Assad's supporters tried to break into Turkish missions on Saturday to denounce an Arab League decision to suspend Syria's membership over its crackdown on the eight-month uprising. Turkey is not a member of the league, but welcomed the decision.

Erdogan took pains to note that his comments were politically neutral.

"It is not among our expectations that the Assad regime meet all the demands of the (Syrian) people," Erdogan said. "Our wish is that it, which is now on a knife-edge, does not enter this road of no return, which leads to the edge of the abyss."

Turkey evacuated the families of diplomats after Saturday's attacks on its embassy in Damascus and its consulates in the cities of Aleppo and Latakia.

"I again strongly condemn the attack on the Turkish flag and our missions," Erdogan said.

Turkish President Abdullah Gul warned Syria that it must protect Turkish missions.

"If they don't take necessary measures, no doubt our reaction will be different if it is repeated," Gul said.

Turkey has long urged Syria to end the crackdown, which the U.N. estimates has killed more than 3,500 people since mid-March.

"No regime can survive by killing or jailing," Erdogan said. "No one can build a future over the blood of the oppressed."

Turkey's government had cultivated warm ties with Assad, but has grown highly critical of his government. Turkey has imposed an arms embargo on Syria and is expected to announce other sanctions. Turkey has also opened its borders to Syrians fleeing the violence. More than 7,700 refugees are being sheltered in several Turkish camps along the Syrian border.

Turkey has also allowed a Syrian opposition group, the Syrian National Council, to hold meetings in Turkey.

The council, a broad-based opposition umbrella group, was formed in Istanbul in September. No country has recognized it so far as a legal representative of the country and Syria has threatened tough measures against any country that does.

(AP) ? Rival militias clashed on the outskirts of the Libyan capital for a fourth day Sunday in the deadliest and most sustained violence since the capture and killing of Moammar Gadhafi last month.

Fighters attacked each other with rockets, mortars and machine guns, witnesses said. The fighting, which has killed at least 13 people since late last week, raised new concerns about the ability of Libya's transitional government to disarm thousands of gunmen and restore order after an eight-month civil war.

Libya's interim leader, Mustafa Abdul-Jalil, said his National Transitional Council brought together elders from the feuding areas ? the coastal city of Zawiya and the nearby tribal lands of Warshefana ? over the weekend and that the dispute has been resolved. "I want to assure the Libyan people that everything is under control," he said Sunday.

However, as he spoke, fighting continued.

Heavy gunfire and explosions of rocket-propelled grenades were heard over hours Sunday in the area between the Warshefana lands, about 18 miles (30 kilometers) west of Tripoli, and Zawiya, another 10 miles (15 kilometers) to the west. White smoke rose into the air.

At one point, the two sides were battling for control of a major military camp of the ousted regime, said a fighter from Tripoli. The camp, once a base of elite forces commanded by one of Gadhafi's sons, Khamis, is located on a highway midway between Tripoli and Zawiya.

In all, at least 13 people were killed in the fighting, including four from Zawiya and nine from Warshefana, according to gunmen and a hospital doctor in Warshefana. More than 100 people from Warshefana were wounded since Saturday, said Dr. Mohammed Sawan, adding that casualties stemmed from gunshots as well as shrapnel from rockets and mortar shells.

On Sunday evening, a Warshefana field commander, Ashraf Borwais, delivered a severely burned fighter to the local hospital. He said the man was wounded when his vehicle was struck by artillery and exploded. Borwais said fighting had stopped in the evening. "The dogs have retreated," he said, referring to the Zawiya militiamen.

Zawiya fighters, meanwhile, manned roadblocks on the outskirts of their city at intervals of about 200 yards (meters). Groups of jumpy armed men, some brandishing RPGs, crowded around the checkpoints. Fighters searched trunks of cars and checked IDs.

The reason for the initial clash remains unclear, though accusations have been flying, including that some of the Warshefana had links to the old regime. At one point last week, fighters from Zawiya entered Warshefana and seized weapons. In retaliation, Warshefana fighters set up random checkpoints and fired at the main highway.

Abdul-Jalil said the NTC has established a committee to address the grievances of both sides. He said the fighting was sparked by young men behaving irresponsibly, but he did not elaborate.

Since the Oct. 20 death of Gadhafi, there have been a number of violent clashes between fighters, including a deadly shootout at a Tripoli hospital. Residents of the capital have also become increasingly annoyed with fighters from other areas of Libya who have taken over prime locations in the city, including a gated seaside resort village.

Despite the growing tensions, Abdul-Jalil and other NTC leaders have said they cannot disarm the fighters quickly.

Noting high unemployment among the armed men, Abdul-Jalil said the new government must offer alternatives first, including jobs, study and training.
