Mathematics is?needed for?almost all??jobs??and??careers?. ?To help studentsrealistically choose?a??career??or?job??, it is?important?for them to beaware of the?math skills??that are needed??in??particular??career paths. ?If?a student??hates math and has?never?earned a grade better than a C in?a math?class, it may not be a good?suggestion?to set??set goals for??a career in engineering. ?This article is not intended to discourage?anyone?from??an interest in??a chosen?profession??, but instead to??educate students and parents?on the math skills?that are needed?and how??students can improve their????understanding of math??so they can?pursue??their?chosen profession or trade.
Before I??talk about??the mathematics?requirements?for different??trades??, I would like to?talk about?what we??need to??do when a??child??isn?thaving success??in??mathmatics??but still??wants??to pursue a?trade??involving??math??. ?As I?said?before, I am not trying to discourage anyone from a chosen?career?. So, with that said, what can??parents and teachers??do for children to help them?succeed??in?math?so they canchoose??a profession?of interest?.
First?of all?, start when??your??are young. ?When children are young, they can?experience failure??that literally traumatize them for??ever??. ?One of these experiences is feeling?dumb?because of not??comprehending??math. ?A commonmistake??is to allow young children??the use of??a calculator for??math assignments?when they??have difficulty??doing it by hand. ? ?Early?In??math education, sets the?base??for more?advanced?mathematical??ideas??. ?Remember, if someone can?t??find the product of??23 and 45?, he/she won?t be able to ?find the product of?? (3z + 5) and (2y ? 1)??. ?Doing?basic?arithmetic is the??foundation??to mathematical?thinking?. ?Please do not??have students??? access??calculators until they??understand??how to solve?math?problems by hand. ?Once??they are allowed to use calculators,?have?them?do?mental math and?solve??problems?out by?hand to keep??math skills????honed??. ?Somesimple?ideas for mental math??can be??asking them?questions?about??the ?times? table,?calculating??the tip at a restaurant,??estimating???the tax on a bill, or even?adding-up??and estimating the total cost of items??you are buying??at the??supermarket?.
What about?students?that??have developed??negative feelings?aboutmath?? ??One option??to do is go back in their?education?and??discover??when/where they??started having problems??and disliking math. ?Review and re-teach?the??topics??they??need help with??, andgo?forward to help them??be??more comfortable with?math?. ???Much of the dislike???that some students have towards math is a result of?fear?. ?It?is?easier to say, ?I??hate??math,? then to??understand the feelings??and move?on??. ?There are?several?resources??that are??available to help ??children??get back on the path of??math??success. ?It will take?a lot of?work, but theresult?will be a?child?that?has?a choice of any?career?.
Some of the online resources available are ?online geometry?,??virtual math lab?, and?virtual algebra?tutoring. ?There are?many??learning centers and??tutors??that?you can find?through your localcollege or school district?. ?Which?ever resource(s) you choose,decide?what you expect??from???tutoring or the learning?service?. ?Express?your goals to those?working?with your??student??, so you can work?as a team??to best help your?child??excel?. ?If you try a service and it?seems to make?your child anxious,?find?out what is causing the anxiety and if??needed??,??try a different service??. ?Additional?anxiety?will only?reinforce the?dislike and fear?of??mathematics??. ?Also, you can??discuss your concern with??a school counselor tofind strategies?to help?your child cope with the?anxiety?. ?You can?even?consult a therapist if the anxiety seems to??debilitate or overwhelm??your child. ?
Taking steps to remove the?fear?of math can only??benefit??your child. ??What?ever?tools??you?choose?to use for your child (tutors, counselors, or therapists) will help him/her toovercome math anxiety?. ?Once the?anxiety?is under control, your?studentwill have the confidence to?succeed in?math?!
