The Dallas Mavericks may have had one of their best draft performances in recent history. The Mavs used one draft pick in Tyler Zeller, and a seldom used guard in Kelenna Azubuike, to pick up three choices in Thursdays draft. The Mavs traded Zeller and Azubuike to Cleveland for three draft picks, which they used to pick up Oregon State shooting guard Jared Cunningham, Florida State center Bernard James and Marquette small forward Jae Crowder.
Jared Cunningham has drawn comparisons fro the Mavericks organizations to be athletically similar to Russell Westbrook. If that?s the case, the 24th overall pick in the draft for a player like Westbrook is an absolute steal. Cunningham led the Pac-12 in steals the last two seasons, and was second in points with 17.9 per game.
The second player the Mavs picked up was 27 year old Bernard James. Alot of people are wary of picking up a 27 year old player in the draft, but James has the skills to back it up, Ranking second all time at Florida State in field goal percentage with 62.7% and third in career blocked shots with 164. To get a feel for the kid, James served in the United States Air Force from 2003-2009, before attending Florida State.
The final pick the Mavs will hold onto is Marquette forward Jae Crowder. Crowder was the Big East player of the year last season, averaging 17.5 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 2.5 steals per game.
How do you think the Mavericks came out on draft day?
