MCCS President John Fitzsimmons today announced that Dr. William Cassidy, currently serving as interim president of Washington County Community College, will remain in the position through the coming academic year. Dr. Cassidy served as president of WCCC from 2003 to 2009 and returned to the college on an interim basis on July 1, 2012, when President Joyce Hedlund retired.
A search for a new president at WCCC began in February. It concluded last week without a nominee. The MCCS Board of Trustees intends to reopen the search in January of 2013.??
President Fitzsimmons expressed his appreciation to Dr. Cassidy for his willingness to extend his appointment through next June:? ?We are fortunate to have someone of Bill?s abilities and experiences available to lead WCCC this year. The enthusiasm and skills he brings to the job will mean that WCCC doesn?t skip a beat during this transition period.?
A graduate of Calais Memorial High School, Dr. Cassidy?s career in education has spanned three decades at both the secondary and post-secondary levels. Before becoming president at WCCC, he served in a number of senior administrative posts within the Maine Community College System, as an associate commissioner within the Maine Department of Education, as director of the Waterville Regional Vocational Center, and as a teacher at the middle, high school, and college levels.?
Dr. Cassidy holds credentials from Northern Maine Technical College (now Northern Maine Community College), the University of Maine at Machias, Husson College, the University of Maine, and Nova Southeastern University.
