Registration for Malden/East Boston Youth Hockey (MEB) will be held on Saturday, March 31, 2012, at the Porrazzo Memorial Skating Rink in East Boston, at Constitution Beach, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 NOON.

The cost for registration is $50, and we are accepting applications for the full range of levels in the program from Learn to Skate (age 4 or older) through our 'Midget' level that runs to age 18 (birth year 1994).

Our league has seen increased enrollment this year in the younger levels, and we are always open to others joining the league.? Tuition fees for MEB Youth Hockey have remained the same for the past three years, during times when many others have raised fees to cover increasing costs.? We have experienced a resurgence of interest in the sport and in our league over the past few years, and look forward to more of the same next season.

The courtyard dining in Piatto is like something straight out of Italy. It?s open yet covered (good when sandstorms kick in). The sunlight is bountiful and the atmosphere is light and airy. The trickle of water from the fountain, the melodic beats of utensils, and the chatter from nearby tables create an ambiance that is not normally found in Riyadh?s restaurants.

Normally, a vision of mushroom and tomato-topped bruschetta with green salad on my table might put me off. But Piatto?s bruschetta and salad are visions of freshness; crisp, delicate, and topped with luscious cheese and tomatoes. Equaly good was the salmon pasta;? al dente farfalle swathed in a pinkish-orange sauce ? simply beautiful. As for my dining companions, they enjoyed their chicken drizzled with lemon and grilled salmon mains.

As for Dessert , this was fast and light. A visit to Piatto is not complete if you skip their Gelato, a creamy but very light Italian ice cream. Add creme brulee and tiramisu and you?ll have three pieces of heaven; all in one platter, a tidal wave of sweetness and decadence.

By the time we left Piatto after our hearty lunch, a line has already formed in the waiting area. At such times finding a parking space can be tricky, so arrive early. Although there are cushioned booths in the family section, I can?t recommend dining in the courtyard enough. Prices are a little higher than your usual Italian restaurant, but it?s definitely worth it. I?ll try their pizza next time!

Kids Count Radio: Lauer explains what it takes to be a good coach ...

Larry Lauer, coaching director at the Institute for the Study of Youth Sports?(ISYS) and MSU kinesiology researcher, recently appeared on the Indiana-based Kids Count Radio Show. The program, which is produced by the Indiana Youth Institute, recruited Lauer to?give an expert opinion?about the important roles that coaches play in the lives of youth athletes ? especially in underserved areas such as Detroit.

Research from ISYS?states that under-served youth athletes?gain more life-skill and character development when their coaches place greater emphasis on creating caring climates instead of focusing on competition. The two most important elements of coaching, Lauer said,?are a combined effort?to demonstrate that they care?about the kids, and then help them improve individually?on their own level.

?Meet the kids where they?re at,? Lauer advised. ?Give them some sense of control?over their situation, help them make good decisions, talk to them about things that are happening on the field and try to transfer it into their lives, whether it?s in school, family or social situations.?

Regarding youth athletes in?under-served communities, Lauer believes that the population has not been studied enough, and therefore cannot obtain the proper resources needed.

?At Michigan State, we really feel a responsibility to reach out to those groups and really try find ways to help them,? he said.

Although Lauer acknowledged that coaches only get to spend an average of four to six hours with young athletes, he said?they still?have the potential to make a?difference. Focusing on self-improvement, he said,?is the key to life skill development.

Starbucks, Cafe Nero, Costa an the like, it's not the shops that I dislike, it's the people who frequent them an buy into the whole lifestyle thing.

I've never been into one, not just because I'm a tight arse an wouldn't dream of payin ?3 for a cardboard cup of froth, but because I hate that whole I have to get my caffeine fix first thing cause I'm sooo stressed with work an my busy lifestyle thing.

What a load of bollocks these people spout about a Tall skinny Latte or a Double decaf soya latte. What's an Americano? A flat white? What is this nonsense?

It's Coffee.

Maxwell house or Nescafe, that's as much as you need to know about Coffee.

Or perhaps a fair trade brand that tastes crap but makes you feel like your doin your bit to save the planet.

Every business, whether they have a headcount of 3 or a headcount of 3000 should have a HR (human?resources) mindset. HR for a company of 3 you might scoff, how is HR relevant to a fledgling company that is only that size? The term HR or Personnel?puts fear in some people?s eyes; they employ, they sack, they appraise and legislate, all the stuff, that you or I, would probably rather not have to do!

However having a HR mindset is?fundamental?to any new business. Take away the corporate exterior, the term HR, should simply mean the talent, workforce or people that makes up your team. In that sense we are all HR and it should be our duty to make sure that part of the business is not only functional, but working as hard as it can be to get it right!

With this in mind, he is our non definitive list of things you may wish to consider when starting a business from scratch?

The right Skills?

Job titles when you are starting out ? really do not count for too much really. You can call your self anything really and the reality is that if you start with a headcount of 1 or 2, your job will have to encompass pretty much everything. However this can be an advantage. Firstly you are used to having a ?all hands on deck mentality? and secondly it can help you spot talent that you might want to add to your workforce.If you are good at Sales, but bad at Finance, get someone with a head for figures. If you are a creative soul, but can?t manage a paper bag, nevermind an office, get someone with a good ability to multitask and administer. Do not try to recruit people who may have similar skills ? brilliant as they are, as they will strengthen one part of your operation, but continue to make the other part of your business weaker.

A complimentary Co-Founder or two, can also help with this problem, and this is why many leading Entrepreneurs, recommend that you start with a headcount of two, as you not only double your workforce, you double your complimentary talent and skills too.

Performance and Appraisals

This sounds like a dirty word to many of us ? however managing performance, reviewing systems and having clarity on employment expectations can be key to running a steady and growing business. When you do end up employing a staff member, it is important that you demonstrate from the outset that you take their employment seriously. There is nothing worse, than on an employees first day, being sat down and being told to get on with it?Get on with what?!! Having clear expectations and reviewing those expectations weekly or monthly, means a staff member understands what they need to do and achieve, but it can also make them feel valued and of value. Appraisals and performance reviews can also help to clarify issues or problems and come up with workable solutions.

Record your appraisals as well ? and make sure that both parties agree that this is what was agreed. At worst, make sure that the appraisal is email over, and at best use some kind of software performance management system that will save you time and also make sure that the meetings you have, are recorded and stored. Yes they do cost, but so can bad practive, so as you grow, it might be worth looking at someone like Halogen Software UK who offer software solutions to employee performance management.

Cover Yourself?

No not in chocolate, or some other sweet delight, (as you might end up in some kind of HR issue), but cover yourself legally. It?s not for me to say what the legal?s are, I am no legal eagle, but just be aware that legislation is important and must be followed. Again, as our blog is read by people from all parts of the World, legislation is differing depending on where you live, so make sure you research HR rules that are specific to where you live. Non HR people may be concerned by the term ?legislation?, but really it is there to protect you the employer, as much as the employee, so make sure that you don?t look at guidelines with fear, look at them with respect and you should always be fine!

Beijing, China -- Wiley-Blackwell, the scientific, technical, medical and scholarly publishing business of John Wiley & Sons, Inc, has launched a new series of life science pages on WileyChina.com. The pages, ranging across the life science spectrum, will make the website a key resource for Chinese scientists looking for the latest research, or for guidance in publishing their own results in international journals.

The new content will include free papers from leading international journals, features on Chinese journals and editors, Chinese-language author services and support, and new special themed pages each month, starting with climate change and plant science in March.

Each new page will feature a wealth of content. This month the pages include a new special collection of articles from WIREs Climate Change which brings together 15 of the most significant papers related to the environmental issues highlighted by China's National Climate Change Program.

Two presentations in Mandarin have also been added to the Author Workshops page; Author Strategies for Successful Publication and Publication Ethics.

Following the launch of climate change and plant science in March, subsequent pages will include: proteomics in April, stem cells in May, biotechnology in June, ecology, conservation and aquaculture in July, food science and technology in August, microbiology in September, and earth and environmental science in October.
