Kent State student arrested for alleged Twitter threat about plan to "shoot up" campus

(AP) CLEVELAND - Police have arrested and charged a 19-year-old Kent State University student who allegedly posted a message on Twitter saying he planned to "shoot up" the campus.

WEWS-TV reports that William Koberna was arrested at his parents' home in Brunswick Sunday afternoon. He's been charged with inducing panic, a felony, and aggravated menacing.

A university spokesman said Sunday night the tweet was posted July 25.

Koberna is to be arraigned in court on Monday. He also faces hearings that can result in his suspension or dismissal from the university.

Kent State University President Lester A. Lefton said in a statement, "Our students, employees, and all those who come to campus should know that their safety is our top priority. Any threat to our campus community is taken seriously and immediately investigated."

Book review: The Radioactive Boy Scout.

When I and my three younger siblings were growing up, our parents had a habit of muttering, ?A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.? The muttering that followed that aphorism usually had to do with the danger coming from the ?little? amount of knowledge rather than a more comprehensive understanding of whatever field of endeavor was playing host to the hare-brained scheme of the hour. Now, as a parent myself, I suspect that another source of danger involved asymmetric distribution of the knowledge among the interested parties: while our parents may have had knowledge of the potential hazards of various activities, knowledge that we kids lacked, they didn?t always have detailed knowledge of what exactly we kids were up to. It may take a village to raise a child, but it can take less than an hour for a determined child to scorch the hell out of a card table with a chemistry kit. (For the record, the determined child in question was not me.)

The question of knowledge ? and of gaps in knowledge ? is a central theme in The Radioactive Boy Scout: The Frightening True Story of a Whiz Kid and His Homemade Nuclear Reactor by Ken Silverstein. Silverstein relates the story of David Hahn, a Michigan teen in the early 1990s who, largely free of adult guidance or supervision, worked tirelessly to build a breeder reactor in his back yard. At times this feels like a tale of youthful determination to reach a goal, a story of a self-motivated kid immersing himself in self-directed learning and doing an impressive job of identifying the resources he required. However, this is also a story about how, in the quest to achieve that goal, safety considerations can pretty much disappear.

David Hahn?s source of inspiration ? not to mention his guide to many of the experimental techniques he used ? was The Golden Book of Chemistry Experiments. Published in 1960, the text by Robert Brent conveys an almost ruthlessly optimistic view of the benefits chemistry and chemical experimentation can bring, whether to the individual or to humanity as a whole. Part of this optimism is what appears to modern eyes as an alarmingly cavalier attitude towards potential hazards and chemical safety. If anything, the illustrations by Harry Lazarus downplay the risks even more than does the text ? across 112 pages, the only pictured items remotely resembling safety apparatus are lab coats and a protective mask for an astronaut.

Coupled with the typical teenager?s baseline assumption of invulnerability, you might imagine that leaving safety considerations in the subtext, or omitting them altogether, could be a problem. In the case of a teenager teaching himself chemistry from the book, relying on it almost as a bible of the concepts, history, and experimental techniques a serious chemist ought to know, the lack of focus on potential harms might well have suggested that there was no potential for harm ? or at any rate that the harm would be minor compared to the benefits of mastery. David Hahn seems to have maintained this belief despite a series of mishaps that made him a regular at his local emergency room.

Ah, youth.

Here, though, The Radioactive Boy Scout reminds us that young David Hahn was not the only party operating with far too little knowledge. Silverstein?s book expands on his earlier Harper?s article on the incident with chapters that convey just how widespread our ignorance of radioactive hazards has been for most of the history of our scientific, commercial, and societal engagement with radioactivity. At nearly every turn in this history, potential benefits have been extolled (with radium elixirs sold in the early 1900s to lower blood pressure, ease arthritis pain, and produce ?sexual rejuvenescence?) and risks denied, sometimes until the body count was so large and the legal damages were so high that they could no longer be denied.

Surely part of the problem here is that the hazards of radioactivity are less immediately obvious than those of corrosive chemicals or explosive chemicals. The charred table is directly observable in a way that damage to one?s body from exposure to radioisotopes is not (partly because the table doesn?t have an immune system that kicks in to try to counter the damage). But the invisibility of these risks was also enhanced when manufacturers who used radioactive materials proclaimed their safety for both the end-user of consumer products and the workers making those products, and when the nuclear energy industry throttled the information the public got about mishaps at various nuclear reactors.

Possibly some of David Hahn?s teachers could have given him a more accurate view of the kinds of hazards he might undertake in trying to build a back yard breeder reactor ? but the teen didn?t seem to feel like he could get solid mentoring from any of them, and didn?t let them in on his plans in any detail. The guidance he got from the Boy Scouts came in the form of an atomic energy merit badge pamphlet authored by the Atomic Energy Commission, a group created to promote atomic energy, and thus one unlikely to foreground the risks. (To be fair, this merit badge pamphlet did not anticipate that scouts working on the badge would actually take it upon themselves to build breeder reactors.) Presumably some of the scientists with whom David Hahn corresponded to request materials and advice on reactions would have emphasized the risks of his activities had they realized that they were corresponding with a high school student undertaking experiments in his back yard rather than with a science teacher trying to get clear on conceptual issues.

Each of these gaps of information ended up coalescing in such a way that David Hahn got remarkably close to his goal. He did an impressive job isolating radioactive materials from consumer products, performing chemical reactions to put them in suitable form for a breeder reactor, and assembling the pieces that might have initiated a chain reaction. He also succeeded in turning the back yard shed in which he conducted his work into a Superfund site. (According to Silverstein, the official EPA clean-up missed materials that his father and step-mother found hidden in their house and discarded in their household trash ? which means that both the EPA and those close enough to the local landfill where the radioactive materials ended up had significant gaps in their knowledge about the hazards David Hahn introduced to the environment.)

The Radioactive Boy Scout manages to be at once an engaging walk through a challenging set of scientific problems and a chilling look at what can happen when scientific problems are stripped out of their real-life context of potential impacts for good and for ill that stretch across time and space and impact people who aren?t even aware of the scientific work being undertaken. It is a book I suspect my 13-year-old would enjoy very much.

I?m just not sure I?m ready to give it to her.

Italian yields drop in bond auctions

MILAN (AP) ? Italy won some respite on Monday as it managed to tap investors for ?5.48 billion ($6.75 billion) with key borrowing rates lower than they had been previously.

The Italian Treasury said the interest rates on its 5-year and 10-year bonds dropped in the auction.

The yield on the 10-year bonds fell to 5.96 percent from 6.19 percent, while the rate on the five-year issue declined to 5.29 percent from 5.84 percent.

The amount raised was slightly less than the ?5.5 billion sought. Demand was also a bit soft, with the offering only 1.3 times oversubscribed.

Markets have grown increasingly hopeful over the past few days that European leaders are preparing more aggressive action to deal with the debt crisis that's ravaged the 17-country eurozone for over two years.

Premier Mario Monti will meet with Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy in Madrid on Thursday to discuss the ongoing crisis.

Before going to Spain, Monti travels Tuesday to Paris to meet with French President Francois Hollande and Wednesday to Finland, where he will meet with European Commissioner for Monetary Affairs Olli Rehn along with Finnish Prime Minister Jyrki Katainen.

Facebook takes it on the chin after earnings

Facebook shares took a beating Friday as markets opened following the first earnings report since the much-hyped public offering of the world's biggest social network.

In early trade, Facebook shares plunged 14.9 percent to $22.84, worse than the declines seen in after-market trade Thursday.

Facebook reported a loss of $157 million in the second quarter, largely because of accounting rules requiring it to set aside reserves for stock compensation. Excluding that, the results were largely in line with estimates, with a profit from operations of $515 million on $1.18 billion in revenues.

But analysts said the social media space is under pressure and that Facebook would need to show more spectacular gains to justify its stock market value.

Victor Anthony at Topeka Capital Markets said the results were largely in line with expectations "but the market wanted more."

"We believe guidance would have helped stabilize the share price but ultimately some patience will be needed as this growth story builds," he said in a note to clients.

Trip Chowdhry at Global Equities Research said the results confirmed his view that the public offering in May was poorly priced.

"Remain in the sidelines, IPO was totally mispriced and engagement levels on Facebook are not yet stable," he said in note.

Facebook, which made a market splash in May, said that excluding special items, its results for the second quarter showed a profit of 12 cents a share, in line with most forecasts, as revenue rose to $1.18 billion, a bit above market estimates.

The results showed growth for Facebook in overall revenue, operating profits and the number of users -- which grew to 955 million by the end of the quarter.

Revenue for the second quarter totaled $1.18 billion, an increase of 32 percent from the same period a year ago.

Advertising revenue -- 84 percent of the total -- was $992 million, up 28 percent.

(AP) ? The Syrian government launched an offensive Saturday to retake rebel-held neighborhoods in the nation's commercial hub of Aleppo, unleashing artillery, tanks and helicopter gunships against poorly armed opposition fighters.

Yet after a day of fighting, the rag-tag rebel forces remained in control of their neighborhoods in Syria's largest city, said activists, suggesting they had successfully fought off the government's initial assault.

The international community has raised an outcry about a possible massacre in this city of 3 million but acknowledged there was little they could do to stop the bloodshed. The foreign minister of Russia, a powerful ally of Syria, said it was "simply unrealistic" for the Syrian regime to cede control.

The state-controlled al-Watan newspaper celebrated the assault with a banner headline proclaiming the fight for Aleppo "the mother of all battles."

The rebels are estimated to control between a third and a half of the neighborhoods in this sprawling city, especially a cluster in the northeast around Sakhour neighborhood and in the southwest.

They began their attempt to wrest this key city from the government's control a week ago. About 162 people have been killed, mostly civilians, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which does not include soldiers in its toll. Some 19,000 people have been killed since the uprising began in March 2011, estimated the group.

For Saturday, activists estimate that at least two dozen have died so far in the day's fighting.

Local activist Mohammed Saeed said the rebels have managed to keep the regime's tanks at bay so far with rocket-propelled grenades.

"The army hasn't been able to take any neighborhoods yet, there are too many from the Free Syrian Army," Saeed said, referring to the rebels.

He estimated that about 1,000 fighters had poured into the city in the past few days to take on the Syrian army, which had been massing forces around the city ahead of its attack.

By the end of Saturday, according to the Observatory, the government appeared to have pulled back from its ground offensive and was resuming its bombardment of various neighborhoods with artillery. Attack helicopters pounded rebel positions.

There were few details about the attack in the state press, although it issued a long list of victories across the country against the "terrorists," as the rebels are referred to, a sign of widespread fighting.

The international community has expressed growing concern that there could be major bloodshed if Syrian troops retake Aleppo. But Western nations and their allies have found themselves powerless to prevent the situation from deteriorating despite a series of diplomatic efforts, including a cease-fire agreement that never took effect.

Kofi Annan, who brokered the agreement, expressed concern Saturday about the weapons buildup in Aleppo. "I remind the parties to the conflict of their obligations under international humanitarian law and human rights law, and urge them to exercise restraint and avoid any further bloodshed."

In a statement, the Arab League expressed "deep dissatisfaction for the Syrian regime's acts of oppression," particularly the use of heavy weapons against its own people. It urged Syria "to stop the cycle of killing and violence and lift the siege off the Syrian neighborhoods under attack."

The group's deputy chief, Ahmed Ben Hali added that the Arab states were preparing a resolution in front of the United Nations General Assembly calling for the creation of safe havens to protect civilians and to apply further sanctions on the regime.

Measures passed in the General Assembly are largely symbolic and not binding. The West and its Arab allies have been unable to pass effective resolutions in the more powerful Security Council. China, and especially Syria's close ally, Russia, have vetoed any attempt to sanction Bashar Assad's regime.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Saturday called the bloodshed in Aleppo a tragedy, but asked what else could the government do against the rebellion.

"Now the city of Aleppo is occupied by the armed opposition; another tragedy is imminent there," he said. "How can it be hoped that in such a situation the government will simply give in, say 'Okay, I wasn't right, overthrow me, change the regime ? it's simply unrealistic."

Russia has been a key source of support for Syria, although Moscow officials in recent months have said they are simply taking a more even-handed approach while the West offers support to the rebels.

French President Francois Hollande even chided Russia and China on Saturday, asking them to "take into consideration ... that it will be chaos and civil war if at some moment Assad isn't stopped."

It's been a difficult two weeks for the Syrian government, with assaults on its two main cities, a bomb that killed four top security officials and a string of high-profile defections.

The country's military apparatus, though, has remained intact and continues to crush the opposition's remnants in Damascus and its outskirts.

If they really try to make a stand in Aleppo, the rebels risk being annihilated by superior firepower, and may instead withdraw to preserve their forces as they did in Damascus last week.

Italy welcomed Friday's release of two Italian electrical engineers, who had been captured eight days ago by militants.

Domenico Tedeschi and Oriano Cantani, who worked on power plants, told reporters in Damascus that they had been kidnapped by five or six masked men who intercepted their car as they drove to the airport. They were later rescued by the Syrian army.

Amid the fighting, three Syrian athletes took part in the first day of competition in London's Olympic games in swimming, shooting and boxing.

All were defeated, including Wessam Slama, a bantam weight boxer who was one of Syria's better medal hopes.

The team's leader, Maher Khayata, whose family is currently trapped by the fighting in Aleppo, said their thoughts were always on the situation at home.

"We would like to return with an Olympic medal," he told The Associated Press, "but what we want more is to return to our homeland with the news that fighting has stopped and nobody is being killed anymore."

Robin Roberts Talks Leave of Absence from Good Morning America

Robin Roberts previewed her upcoming leave of absence from Good Morning America last night, as the anchor will soon be taking a break to undergo treatment for a rare blood disorder.

"It's fascinating-slash-scary how to prepare yourself for something like this," Roberts, who has already survived breast cancer, said at the Television Critics Association press tour.

She will be off the air for awhile, starting late next month, to receive a a bone marrow transplant meant to treat myelodysplastic syndromes, a disease of the blood and bone marrow.

Robin Roberts on GMA

How is she feeling at the moment? Roberts admitted to "moments of fatigue," but she cited her program's recent ratings as a major elixir.

"The run that we've had has truly energized me," Roberts said. "It's pretty good medicine, I gotta say, to be taking!"

As for the "wonderful friends" who will be occupying this anchor's seat? Roberts said she looks forward to Barbara Walters, Diane Sawyer, Katie Couric and others sustaining the show's momentum alongside George Stephanopoulos.

We do, too. But we most look forward to the day a happy and healthy Roberts is back in that chair.

Simmons First Net Income Slips To $6.5 Million

Simmons First National Corp. reported second quarter net income of $6.5 million, slightly below the $6.7 million it earned one year ago.

?We continue to benefit significantly from strong asset quality, which has resulted in a reduction in our provision for loan losses, and from our on-going efficiency initiatives that resulted in a decrease in our non-interest expense,? said J. Thomas May, Chairman and CEO.

Total loans for the Pine Bluff-based bank, including those covered by FDIC loss share agreements, were $1.7 billion at June 30, 2012, a decrease of $98 million compared to the same period in 2011.

?The majority of this decrease is related to a $79 million decrease in FDIC covered loans and a $14 million decrease in our student loan portfolio, both of which were expected,? May said.

Legacy loans, excluding FDIC-covered loans, increased $71 million from the previous quarter end.

?Of this increase, $54 million relates to the seasonality in our agricultural and credit card portfolios. Our student loan and consumer portfolios decreased a combined $7 million and our real estate portfolio increased $27 million. We saw growth in our construction, commercial real estate and single family loans,? May added.

Other financial highlights for Simmons First include:

  • At June 30, 2012, total deposits were $2.6 billion, an increase of $22 million, or 0.9%, compared to the same period in 2011.
  • Net interest income for the second quarter of 2012 was $27.3 million, unchanged from the same period of 2011.
  • Non-interest income for the second quarter was $11.1 million, compared to $14.3 million for the second quarter of 2011.

Simmons First stock closed trading on Wednesday at $23.47 a share. The company?s stock has traded between a low of $18.71 per share and $28.54 per share during the past year.

Massive Greenland iceberg heading toward open ocean (+video)

A satellite photo reveals that the iceberg twice the size of Manhattan that recently broke away from the Petermann Glacier is now heading toward open waters.

By OurAmazingPlanet Staff / July 25, 2012

Greenland's Petermann Glacier ice shelf has given birth to a large iceberg, a July 21 satellite image shows.

A massive iceberg that recently broke away from one of Greenland's largest glaciers is making its way downstream and toward the open ocean, a new satellite photo reveals.

The drifting island of ice split from the Petermann Glacier's ice shelf ? the front end of a glacier, which hangs off the land and floats on the ocean.

The newly birthed berg?is estimated to be about 46 square miles (120 square kilometers), and finally broke away from the floating tongue of ice on Monday, July 16, signaling that an ever-growing crack in the ice shelf first spied by satellites in 2001 had finally severed completely.

Satellite images taken on Saturday, July 21, show the large iceberg, with a curved edge where it broke from the ice shelf, is slowly moving down the fjord, a flotilla of far smaller bergs crowding in its wake. ?

Scientists had been watching the inchoate iceberg for years, and predicted it would break away this summer.

In August 2010, a far larger iceberg ? one about twice the size of the brand new berg ? broke from the same Greenland ice shelf. A year later, in July 2011, a Manhattan-size remnant of the colossal iceberg was still roaming the northern seas, and was spotted near the coast of Newfoundland.

Adjusting to a Family Member Returning from Deployment

A parent returning home from deployment is an exciting, joyful time. While family members are happy to be reunited, the initial excitement eventually wears off and families are left to figure out how to readjust to the change.? Every member of the family has changed and grown over the course of the deployment so be patient when it comes to reestablishing connections and routines. Everyone will need some time. There are many things you can do to make the adjustment period as smooth as possible.

  • Limit the surprises. Keep the deployed family member up to date with any changes you?ve made to the house or changes in the family?s schedule. Keep them in the loop even when they can?t be there to help with the decisions so when they come home they are not hit with many changes at once.
  • Listen and reconnect. Everyone has been operating in different environments so it will take time to readjust being together again. Be honest about sharing feelings and listen to the needs of the returning member.
  • Communicate! Open discussion of expectations prior to returning home are helpful if possible. Discuss responsibilities you each have now (finances, child care, etc.) and have they will change after deployment.
  • Approach discipline as a team. One of you has been the main disciplinarian for a while but now that both of you are there, it?s important to discuss what you both think are appropriate responses to bad behavior. If you are the returning parent gradually step back into the disciplinary role as your child is now used to discipline coming from the other parent and may be confused or defiant if you try to take over immediately.
  • Plan family activities. Enjoy your time together. Go to the park, play board games, go on a bike ride, draw, etc. Doing activities together can help everyone reconnect as a family.
  • Get involved with caretaking again. If you were the one gone try changing diapers, help kids get ready for school, or drive them to their activities. This can help to reestablish a routine and help you get used to home life again.
  • Utilize help offered by the military. The military and other organizations can direct you to many resources to help adjust to life after deployment. Remember they are there to help!

Children may need a period of time to warm up to the returning parent, as this time can be overwhelming and confusing for them. Their developmental level will influence their response to the returning family member. Toddlers may not remember the parent well, school age children may not understand a parent?s need to take care of themselves and spend time with their spouses, and teens may seem distant as they carry on their activities with friends so let children readjust on their own time.

Quick tips:

  • Don?t force hugs or play time
  • Listen to what they tell you and accept their feelings
  • Talk about things they are interested in
  • Make time to play together if they want
  • Reinforce your love for your child (hugs, kisses, etc)
  • Spend time reviewing schoolwork, pictures, etc that were done while you were gone.
  • Praise them for what they?ve accomplished during the deployment
  • Have respect for their privacy and friends
  • Encourage them to share what has happened in their personal lives but don?t push or criticize.

This Is A Seriously Awesome, Inspirational Quote From Steve Jobs (AAPL)

This clip of Steve Jobs via Paris Lemon/Dalton Caldwell is just great. Jobs was one of the most quotable men in the world, and this bit of inspiration is fantastic.

The key line: "Everything around you that you call life was made up by people that are no smarter than you and you can change it."

(We know that a lot of people are sick of hearing about Steve Jobs. We're not. If you're one of those people, this post isn't for you, and frankly we're not sure why you clicked on it.)

Is the Author Solutions Acquisition a Good Thing for Authors? | Jane ...

Author Solutions and Pearson

Yesterday, news broke that Pearson (parent company of Penguin) had acquired Author Solutions for $116 million. Read the basics here.

Just to make sure we?re all up to speed:

  • Pearson is one of the Big Six publishers.
  • Author Solutions (ASI) is the world?s leading provider of self-publishing services, primarily dealing in print-on-demand (POD) publishing and related service packages.

As the guy who filmed the double rainbow said: ?What does it mean??

Some writers have reacted to the news by saying, ?This means self-publishing is the future!?

This is a misunderstanding of Author Solutions on a variety of levels, as well as what Pearson might have to gain from acquiring them. Two-thirds of Author Solutions? revenue comes from selling services to authors?not from selling books.

Saying that this is the future is kind of like saying: ?Authors paying hundreds and thousands of dollars to publish a book that never sells more than 100 copies is the future! Yay!?

This is how confused writers are.

But I know what they?re thinking. They see self-publishing in terms of all those success stories you hear about in the media?like JA Konrath, Amanda Hocking, and John Locke.

Well, I challenge you to find one of these phenoms that used Author Solutions as a service provider. Rather, the self-publishing authors making big bucks are folks primarily using Amazon KDP or related ?free? services. In March 2011, I wrote a column for Writer Unboxed, pointing this out, and predicting that POD services, of the type that Author Solutions specializes in, had reached their peak. (Click here to read that post.)

Let?s assume for a moment that my article was correct. Why would a Big Six company invest in a service whose time has already come and gone?especially given that it?s like falling off a log to publish your (electronic) book these days, and that?s what all the publicized success stories focus on. Go publish through Amazon and make a fortune!

Laura Dawson writes that the acquisition is connected to Book Country, the Penguin online community for writers. Acquiring ASI means acquiring a back-end/infrastructure to help monetize that community. But if my theory is correct, then there?s limited money to be made specifically in POD/print services. So Pearson may be looking to grow related paid services to writers that aren?t about POD. (This could include editorial, design, marketing, and promotion services, which ASI also provides.)

That would mean: Self-publishing isn?t exactly the future here. It?s rather making money off a growing number of people who are writing and seeking professional publishing services. As easy as it is to e-publish, it?s not a straightforward matter to navigate the options and produce a professional product that actually sells. Thus, there?s no shortage of people seeking assistance with DIY self-publishing, whether in print or electronic formats. Unfortunately, many people seeking help are not well-informed, don?t have the patience to research their options, and end up writing a big check to someone to make the headache go away. (And by doing so, they?ve assured their sales will be exactly the number of family and friends they can convince to buy their poorly edited, poorly designed book via Facebook wall postings.)

In short: Publishing ain?t for sissies, and no one likes sorting through the mess that is the current industry. That describes a big part of ASI?s business model, though I believe authors are becoming more well-informed every day.

Perhaps the Book Country or Penguin name will be (more) successful in providing services than ASI was, and in improving ASI?s reputation for such services. I have the same thoughts as Victoria Strauss at WriterBeware in this regard.?Specifically, I might be convinced into thinking it?s a smart acquisition IF:

  • They?re sincere and transparent in their dealings with writers, especially about what it means to self-publish, and what is possible.
  • Pearson adds their expertise in print distribution and traditional book publishing practices (particularly sales and marketing) to improve overall services.
  • They offer training or services that have true value and aren?t dubious (eliminate stuff like the?$20,000 Hollywood trailer).
  • To authors jumping on the e-publishing trend, they offer professional services that are complementary to services that already exist. What I love so much about existing e-publishing services?whether BookBaby, Smashwords, Amazon KDP, B&N PubIt!, or others?is that they are nonexclusive (you can use them in coordination with one another), and they honestly compete on royalty rates. I think Pearson/ASI can work best if they?re offering professional services that help authors amplify their success on existing channels (or somehow extend their distribution). It seems unlikely they can effectively compete with Amazon, unless it?s by offering misleading royalty rates and gotcha clauses. (That?s what ASI?s BookTango did for a while.)

I have little faith, though. This is a for-profit venture, not charity. And it seems unlikely that Pearson would meaningfully change any business practices that made ASI profitable in the first place. Corporations too often take the short-term view, and milk acquisitions dry, rather than take a long-term view.

But here?s another wrinkle: If you didn?t know, a growing part of ASI?s business since roughly 2009 has been establishing white-label services. Thomas Nelson, Harlequin, Hay House, and even my former employer, Writer?s Digest, ended up striking deals with ASI to offer paid publishing services you might know better as WestBow, DellArte, Balboa, and Abbott Press. But those traditional publishers aren?t fulfilling those services; ASI is. The publishers selling the service are extending their brands, their customers, and their marketing power?and receiving a nice chunk of the profit in return. (I want to note here that I left Writer?s Digest before Abbott Press was formed; I was against the idea.)

Check out this big visual at the Author Solutions corporate website:

Author Solutions publishing partnerships

I?m sad to say I?ve heard publishing executives talk about the opportunity to ?monetize unpublished manuscripts? and it?s why I left commercial publishing. Is this where the industry is headed? If so, I want no part of its future.

But what do you think the endgame is?

President Obama's jobs panel missing in action

Quote:

President Obama's jobs panel missing in action

At this point, the hiatus ? which reached the half-year mark Tuesday ? might be less awkward than an official meeting, given the hornet?s nest of issues that could sting Obama and the council members if the private-sector panel gets together.

White House: Obama too busy
For starters, there?s the discomfort many business leaders may feel in appearing to embrace the president with his reelection bid in full swing.

Then, there?s the fact that some members of the commission have conspicuously declined to endorse him. And that Obama has conspicuously declined to endorse some of their recommendations. And that some of what Obama won?t endorse has been warmly embraced by Republicans, including likely GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney.

To cap it all off, several of the companies whose CEOs serve on the panel are involved to some extent in outsourcing ? a fact that could undercut the ferocious attack Obama and his campaign are mounting on Romney over his alleged ties to the practice.

One former administration official said the current political atmosphere could be prompting the CEOs and other business leaders to lie low.

TOO Busy to do his JOB - been on permanganate vacation since he got selected
