Algeria president in France for tests after minor stroke

By Lamine Chikhi

ALGIERS (Reuters) - Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika was transferred to France for medical tests on Saturday night after suffering a minor stroke, Algeria's official news agency said.

Bouteflika, who has ruled over the North African oil and gas producer for more than a decade, had an "transient ischemic attack" or mini-stroke on Saturday but his condition was not serious, the APS agency said, quoting the prime minister.

The 76-year-old is part of an older generation of leaders who have dominated politics in a country that supplies a fifth of Europe's gas imports and cooperates with the West in combating Islamist militancy.

He has rarely appeared in public in recent months, prompting speculation about his health.

"The president felt unwell and he has been hospitalised but his condition is not serious at all," Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal was quoted as saying by APS.

The president was then moved to France, on the recommendation of his doctors.

Bouteflika and other members of Algeria's elite have controlled Algeria since it won independence from France in a 1954-62 war.

In the early 1990s, the military-backed politicians overturned an election which Islamists were poised to win and then fought a conflict with them in which about 200,000 people were killed.

They also saw off the challenge of Arab Spring protests two years ago, with Bouteflika's government defusing unrest through pay rises and free loans for young people.

Bouteflika has served three terms as president of the OPEC member and is thought unlikely to seek a fourth at an election due in 2014.

U.S. diplomatic cables leaked in 2011 said Bouteflika had been suffering from cancer but it was in remission.

More than 70 percent of Algerians are under 30. About 21 percent of young people are unemployed, the International Monetary Fund says, and many are impatient with the gerontocracy ruling a country where jobs, wages and housing are urgent concerns.

A transient ischemic attack is a temporary blockage in a blood vessel to the brain. it typically lasts for less than five minutes and "usually causes no permanent injury to the brain", the American Stroke Association said on its website.

The attacks should be seen as a warning as a third of people who experience them go on to have a full stroke within a year, the organisation added. (Reporting by Lamine Chikhi; Editing by Andrew Heavens)

New arrest made in connection to ricin-laced letters

>>> that's becoming a growing sensation on the internet.

>>> good evening. for the second time in less than two weeks, the fbi has arrested a person they believe since poison laced letters to president obama and two others. we're told the president was informed of today's arrest of a 41-year-old tupelo, mississippi man. he was picked up this morning just days after embarrassed authorities cleared another man arrested in the case, arresting him after admitting they couldn't link him to the letters. the letters were addressed to the president, a u.s. senator and a mississippi judge. tonight, there are questions over the motive and whether someone in this was framed. janet shamlian has the story.

>> reporter: federal agents arrested the karate teacher at his mississippi home. tonight, he's charged with possession of a biological agent with intent to use as a weapon. the latest chapter in a bizarre investigation after ricin laced letters were sent to president obama , senator roger wicker and a mississippi judge. when investigators searched his house and studio earlier this week, the 41-year-old denied any involvement.

>> i had absolutely nothing to do with those letters and the person accused of sending those letters, her defense attorney or his defense attorney steered them in my direction because i was probably an easy target.

>> reporter: he was referring to paul kevin curtis . the man initially arrested for sending the letters. curtis also denied being involved and suggested he might have set him up. he was held six days before terrorism charges were dropped and he was released.

>> what did i think? i had never heard of ricin. i thought they said rice and i said i don't eat rice. i said here's the key to my home. there's no rice. they said you know what we're talking about. they were very angry. it's like they knew they had the right guy.

>> reporter: the men reportedly had a tangleded relationship. the arrest of one and then the other experts say doesn't reflect well on law enforcement .

>> no one is more embarrassed and sorry than the fbi and u.s. attorneys office when something happens like this. they don't want it to happen. they regret it. they are only after the real person reasonable.

>> reporter: prior to today's arrest, he was out on bond on charges of child molestation, which he's pleaded not guilty. if convicted in this case, he could face life in prison . janet shamlian , nbc news, houston.

Belief in God Can Improve Mental Health Outcomes | Psych Central ...

By Rick Nauert PhD Senior News Editor

Belief in God Improves Mental Health Outcomes A new study suggests belief in God may significantly improve the outcome of those receiving short-term treatment for psychiatric illness.

Researchers followed patients receiving care from a hospital-based behavioral health program to investigate the relationship between patients? level of belief in God, expectations for treatment and actual treatment outcomes.

In the study, published in the current issue of Journal of Affective Disorders, researchers comment that people with a moderate to high level of belief in a higher power do significantly better in short-term psychiatric treatment than those without.

?Belief was associated with not only improved psychological well-being, but decreases in depression and intention to self-harm,? says David H. Rosmarin, Ph.D., an instructor in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.

The study looked at 159 patients, recruited over a one-year period. Each participant was asked to gauge their belief in God as well as their expectations for treatment outcome and emotion regulation, each on a five-point scale.

Levels of depression, well-being, and self-harm were assessed at the beginning and end of their treatment program.

Of the patients sampled, more than 30 percent claimed no specific religious affiliation yet still saw the same benefits in treatment if their belief in a higher power was rated as moderately or very high.

Patients with ?no? or only ?slight? belief in God were twice as likely not to respond to treatment as patients with higher levels of belief.

Investigators believe the study demonstrates that a belief in God is associated with improved treatment outcomes in psychiatric care.

?More centrally, our results suggest that belief in the credibility of psychiatric treatment and increased expectations to gain from treatment might be mechanisms by which belief in God can impact treatment outcomes.?

Investigators hope that the study will lead to additional investigation on the clinical implication of spirtual life as more than 90 percent of the U.S. population hold religious beliefs.

Beyond pen sets and paper weights: Gifts fit for a president

(Getty Images)

President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama could stroll around the White House in matching Dior bathrobes and Brazilian soccer jerseys before he grabs his $7,750 golf bag or goes for a ride on his bamboo bicycle while listening to his new 2GB iPod shuffle ? all courtesy of the bewildering array of gifts that world leaders showered on the first couple in 2011.

The list also includes shirts, pens, sculptures, quite a few rugs (way to think outside the box, Afghan leaders!), the occasional flavored liquor, a deluxe package of items linked to the Polish-made video-game "Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings" and one small sword.

The State Department?s office of the chief of protocol on Friday released the list of presents American government officials received from foreign government officials.

[Related: Search and sort all gifts to Obama, Biden and their families.]

Not to worry: The Obamas won?t be keeping the $52,695 gift from Ali Bongo Ondimba, president of the Gabonese Republic. Like most of the items bestowed on the first couple, Ondimba's gift?a ?14? blue mask sculpture by Daum, on a 10? black and silver stand, enclosed in 34? x 16? x 13? red box? is at the National Archives. The U.S. requires all such gifts to be reported and turned over to the archives or other institutions for display. These are not, in short, bribes.

From the list, it appears that the only thing Obama "personally retained" from his 2011 haul is the book ?Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World,? by Jack Weatherford. The president received that work, which retails for $23.95 on Amazon, from his Mongolian counterpart, Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj.

Next to each item is an entry entitled "circumstances justifying acceptance." For gifts to the Obamas, it reads: "Non-acceptance would cause embarrassment to donor and U.S. government."

Gifts to the first family totaled $243,970.96. Of that, items for the president himself totaled $194,125.33; those to the first couple ran $21,438.78; those to the first lady were $22,343.59; and those to daughters Malia and Sasha, $6,063.26.

A Yahoo News review of the gifts shows no obvious thread?not like in 2004, when George W. Bush received a bunch of guns, including a $10,000 sniper's rifle, and a "Worst-Case Survival Handbook." But golf is a big theme for this president, and there are some standouts. The second most-pricey present appears to have come from Sergio Cabral, governor of the state of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. Cabral gave Obama a photograph by artist Vik Muniz entitled "Marat (Sebastiao)." Declared value? $40,000. (Symbolic value? Potentially priceless: Jean-Paul Marat was a radical journalist during the French Revolution. He was murdered in his bathtub.)

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk showed off his hometown pride by giving Obama a lavish package with "Witcher 2"-themed presents and Polish vodka. Here's how the chief of protocol describes the loot:

DVD, title: ?Best of the Witcher 2: Video Trailers for President Barack Obama,? distributor: Atari. Zubrowka Bison Grass Vodka. Book, title: ?Blood of Elves,? by Andrzej Sapkowski. Book, title: ?The Last Wish,? by Andrzej Sapkowski. Set of four 2? x 1.5? clear glass liqueur glasses, each has ?Zubrowka? engraved in white. 13.5? x 9.75? x 4.5? ?Witcher 2? gift box, inside are three golden ?Witcher 2? coins, a ?Witcher 2? book, ?Witcher 2? stickers, ?Witcher 2? make your own aircraft. 5.5? x 6.5? x 3? ivory-colored bust of ?Witcher 2? character ?Gwynbleioo,? a DVD box set of ?Witcher 2? bonus DVD, Game DVD, and Game Guide. ?Witcher 2? playing cards, and 5 wooden die in black sack with ?Witcher 2? emblem. 11.75? x 7? x 5? brown leather carrying case with handles and lock. Rec'd?5/28/2011. Est. Value?$497.08.

Then-French President Nicolas Sarkozy and French first lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy gave Obama the "large, black Hermes golf accessory bag, including set of lock and key, and extra strap in bottom compartment" valued at $7,750?but didn't stop there. Non, monsieur. On other occasions, "Sarko" and his wife presented Obama with a "Lacoste white classic men's polo shirt," a fountain pen, "six black glass goblets in a plastic display case" and a 14"-tall "blue-gray glass sculpture of Bucephalus, Alexander the Great's horse."

And in August 2011, with Washington consumed by the debt-ceiling crisis, the Sarkozys again played to Obama's fondness for golf, giving him a "Crystal golf statuette by Baccarat, depicting a golfer with his iron pitched over his head in the moment before striking a ball. Black Hermes golf travel bag with canvas cover and carrying strap," all for an estimated value of $1,650. Were they done? Nope.

In December 2011, they gave Obama a Louis Vuitton "men's business bag" embossed with "B.O." That was valued at $2,310.

The Sarkozys' generosity didn?t stop there. A Hermes beach towel, a fancy Laguiole letter opener, a reusable grocery tote bag (in case the Obamas don?t want to pay the 5-cent D.C. plastic bag tax?), ?his and hers white, belted Dior bathrobes with ?Dior? embroidered on the breast pocket,? and one of the more amazing gifts on the list. Take it away, State Department chief of protocol:

17? tall Plexiglas sculpture, entitled ?Wrapping Flag Candy USA,? depicting an upright ?Tootsie Roll? with an American flag patterned wrapper, on a 6? x 6.75? x 0.75? clear Plexiglass base, accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.

If you think the good people at the chief of protocol?s office struggled with that one, check out their description of the $778 present from South Korean President Lee Myung-back and first lady Kim Yoon-ok

11? x 14.5? x 7? Korean, black lacquer jewelry box with mother of pearl inlay that depicts landscapes and birds, and has bureau-style doors with turtle-shaped doorknobs on the front and a drawer below, with an inner compartment that has three smaller drawers on the left and a section for hanging necklaces on the right.

Note to members of Congress: If Obama gives you a 9.5? by 12? signed and framed photo of Denmark?s queen and its prince, he?s regifting.

The Philippines ambassador and his wife gave Obama the bamboo bicycle ($1,060). German Chancellor Angela Merkel also thought ?golf!? She gave Obama a $1,400 care package comprising a ?Kramski putter set, includes: 35? HPP 340 putter with two protective club head covers, teal HPT 40 training console, HPS 30 Aim Aid set, book title: 'The Kramski Putt Philosophy.'"

You know what Qatar?s emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, probably didn?t hear from Obama? Anything resembling ?Oh, I already have one just like it.? The emir gave Obama a ?30? circumference gold and silver base with silver statues of two wild goats and a tree with gold clock hanging from it, depicting a desert scene.?

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper seems to have been the only one to zero in on Obama?s other sports passion: basketball.

Harper gave Obama a basketball signed by the 2010-2011 Toronto Raptors.

The list also includes items to Vice President Joe Biden and other officials.

Three Senate Democrats, Jon Tester of Montana, Jack Reed of Rhode Island and Carl Levin of Michigan, each received silver Janbiyas from Dr. Rashad Mohamed Al-Alimi, the deputy prime minister for security forces of the Republic of Yemen. Janbiyas are thick, ornate knives that curve at the blade commonly worn at the belt.

Republican Sens. John McCain of Arizona and Susan Collins of Maine each were given an iPod Touch and an incense burner from King Abdullah II ibn Al Hussein, King of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. (Recommended listening for that gift combination here.)

Earth's core far hotter than thought

New measurements suggest the Earth's inner core is far hotter than prior experiments suggested, putting it at 6,000C - as hot as the Sun's surface.

The solid iron core is actually crystalline, surrounded by liquid.

But the temperature at which that crystal can form had been a subject of long-running debate.

Experiments outlined in Science used X-rays to probe tiny samples of iron at extraordinary pressures to examine how the iron crystals form and melt.

Seismic waves captured after earthquakes around the globe can give a great deal of information as to the thickness and density of layers in the Earth, but they give no indication of temperature.

That has to be worked out either in computer models that simulate the Earth's insides, or in the laboratory.

X-ray vision

Measurements in the early 1990s of iron's "melting curves" - from which the core's temperature can be deduced - suggested a core temperature of about 5,000C.

"It was just the beginning of these kinds of measurements so they made a first estimate... to constrain the temperature inside the Earth," said Agnes Dewaele of the French research agency CEA and a co-author of the new research.

"Other people made other measurements and calculations with computers and nothing was in agreement. It was not good for our field that we didn't agree with each other," she told BBC News.

The core temperature is crucial to a number of disciplines that study regions of our planet's interior that will never be accessed directly - guiding our understanding of everything from earthquakes to the Earth's magnetic field.

"We have to give answers to geophysicists, seismologists, geodynamicists - they need some data to feed their computer models," Dr Dewaele said.

The team has now revisited those 20-year-old measurements, making use of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility - one of the world's most intense sources of X-rays.

To replicate the enormous pressures at the core boundary - more than a million times the pressure at sea level - they used a device called a diamond anvil cell - essentially a tiny sample held between the points of two precision-machined synthetic diamonds.

Once the team's iron samples were subjected to the high pressures and high temperatures using a laser, the scientists used X-ray beams to carry out "diffraction" - bouncing X-rays off of the nuclei of the iron atoms and watching how the pattern changed as the iron changed from solid to liquid.

Those diffraction patterns give more insight into partially molten states of iron, which the team believes were what the researchers were measuring in the first experiments.

They suggest a core temperature of about 6,000C, give or take 500C - roughly that of the Sun's surface.

But importantly, Dr Dewaele said, "now everything agrees".

The Ins and Outs of Group Health Insurance | Jewish Journal

April 24, 2013 | 5:04 pm

Posted by?Shmully Schwartz

Q. What advantages are there by belonging to a group plan?

Well for one, in most cases, your employer will pay most of your monthly premium if not all of it. More money in your pocket is good? You?ll still be responsible for copays and coinsurance but your definite costs are being paid for by the group policy.

Secondly, group plans are guaranteed issue.? Meaning, the insurance carrier can?t deny one particular employee due to a preexisting condition. This is good as well.

Therefore, group plans are ideal for businesses that want to attract talented employees by offering them health insurance at no cost.? It entices the potential employee to your company over someone else?s.

Q. What disadvantages are there in a group plan?

Some companies will deduct money from your payroll in order to pay for your health insurance policy.? Though, if it is only part of the cost, you?re usually better off staying in the group.

In addition, some group plans don?t have the rich benefits that Medicare has. This means that not only is it a lot cheaper for employees over the age of 65 to be on a Medicare approved plan (instead of the group plan), but the monthly premiums, deductible, copays and coinsurance can be a lot more expensive with a group plan. Essentially, you?re paying more and getting less. For this reason many seniors who are still working will disenroll from their group plan and enroll into Medicare along with a Medicare Advantage or supplemental policy (see my blog relating to Medicare Advantage vs. Supplement - or email me directly).

Q. What is the definition of a group health insurance plan?

A group health insurance plan is a policy for two or more people who are connected not for the sole purpose of getting a group health policy. They either belong to a club or, in most scenarios; they work for the same company.

Anyone in the group can apply. It is illegal to discriminate against anyone in the plan for any reason. All must be afforded the option.

Q. What is the SHOP?

The SHOP is the Small Business Health Options Program. It is a government exchange that will go live three months before 2014 so that small businesses (under 50 employees) can shop for group health insurance plans. Some businesses may get a 50% tax credit for going through the exchange!

Q. Who in 2014 must provide a group health plan for their employees?

In 2014 any company with more than 50 employees must provide AFFORDABLE health insurance to their employees. If they do not provide affordable health insurance the company will be penalized for each employee after their first thirty employees.

Please comment with any questions or feedback you?d like to share?

All the best,
Shmully

NYC subway wireless goes live in 30 stations, Sprint and Verizon signing on soon

Wireless access in New York City's subway system has so far been limited, at best: two GSM carriers, one WiFi provider and six stations does not a full network make. Coverage is getting much wider, however, as Transit Wireless just flicked on access in 30 extra stations. While cellular service with this batch is still limited to AT&T and T-Mobile for now, it reaches a much wider swath of Manhattan that includes Times Square, Rockefeller Center and the Museum of Natural History. Those on CDMA carriers also won't be left hanging for long -- both Sprint and Verizon have nearly finished making deals to join the project, with Sprint aiming for service later this year. Although the deployment still leaves big holes in carrier support and geographic reach, it's a big leap for travelers with an urge to stay online while underground.

Update: Verizon now tells us that it's also aiming for service by the end of the year.

Samsung's official Q1 earnings show $6.4 billion in net profit

Samsung Electronics has released its Q1 2013 numbers and as it predicted a few weeks ago, business continues to boom. Operating profits are 8.78 trillion won as predicted, while net profit is up to 7.15 trillion won ($6.4 billion), up sharply from the same quarter last year when its net profit was 5.50 trillion won. Last year at this time we were still anticipating details on the Galaxy S III, but this time around Samsung is on the eve of its worldwide launch for the Galaxy S 4, which should push sales even higher. According to the documents, it's maintained a "steady pace" for Galaxy S III sales, while Note II sales increased and the Tab2 series increased momentum. The news isn't as good for PCs, shipments decreased due to weak demand. earnings in its TV business were also down from last quarter, blamed on the same lower overall market demand noted by LG in its earnings. We're listening in on the earnings call now, we'll have more information on just how it made all that cash (hint: lots of Galaxy phones) in a moment.

Illinois River flood waters begin to recede

PEORIA HEIGHTS, Ill. (AP) ? Floodwaters began a slow, inch-by-inch retreat Wednesday in inundated Peoria, Ill., offering hope to residents who watched helplessly as the Illinois River reached a 70-year high and swamped their homes and businesses.

In downtown Peoria, tens of thousands of white and yellow sandbags stacked 3 feet high lined blocks of the scenic riverfront, holding back waters that already had surrounded the visitors' center and restaurants in the 114-year-old former train depot. Across the street, smaller sandbag walls blocked riverside pedestrian access to the headquarters of heavy equipment maker Caterpillar and the city's arts and culture museum.

The flood will take its toll economically on Peoria, but authorities watching the receding waters expressed relief that, so far, no lives have been lost.

Elsewhere, there were no reports of other significant Midwestern population centers in peril, but officials were urging caution because of predictions that waterways will remain high through early May and sustain pressure on earthen levees.

Concerns persist along the Mississippi River in southeast Missouri, where smaller levees had been overtopped or breached, especially in Lincoln and Pike counties. But sandbag levees in the unprotected towns of Clarksville, Mo., and Dutchtown, Mo., were holding ahead of expected crests later in the week.

Officials in Peoria said the Illinois River finally crested Tuesday at 29.35 feet, eclipsing a 70-year record.

Because the water made numerous roads around the city impassable, firefighters had been especially concerned about being able to battle blazes since the water made numerous roads around the area impassable.

Their closest call came late Tuesday when an above-ground gasoline storage tank at a former boat repair business broke loose, raising concerns of potential disaster if it got swept south into downtown Peoria.

Peoria Heights Fire Chief Greg Walters and others managed to lasso it and wrangle it to shore.

"That's the only real issue we've had at this point," Walters said. "We're fortunate in that respect. I'm feeling blessed. Fingers crossed."

Blair Pumphrey also hoped for good luck, but he wasn't so fortunate. On Wednesday, he was moving out of his small, brick rental home ? its basement flooded to the rafters and the garage swamped. His backyard resembled a lake, with an occasional goose swimming by.

A small wall of sandbags he put up with friends days earlier held off the river for a time, but it proved futile.

"Once the basement started leaking, there was no stopping it," said Pumphrey, 29, an electrician and member of the Illinois Air National Guard. "Then when the river came around the front, there was nothing I could do."

Among those still in their homes was Mark Reatherford. The 52-year-old unemployed baker has lived for decades in his split-level, which has a view of a small park and the Illinois River. By Tuesday afternoon, as a chilly rain fell, the river had rolled over the park and reached Reatherford's home, creating a 3-foot-deep mess in the basement.

He cleared out the basement furniture and was hoping the main floor would stay dry. But he hadn't dismissed the idea of abandoning his home in Peoria Heights, about 150 miles southwest of Chicago.

"You can't get a better view than what we've got here," he said, acknowledging "I'm getting too old to deal with this."

Nearby, retired Caterpillar crane operator Roland Gudat spent much of Tuesday afternoon on his porch swing, marveling at the river, which had swamped houses down the street but largely spared his home of 46 years. The 73-year-old said he had pumped from his basement hundreds of gallons of water that had seeped up from the saturated ground.

Gudat remarked that he'd never seen the river so high, but nonetheless could not tolerate the gawkers that were using neighborhood driveways to turn around.

"I told them this isn't a damn cul-de-sac," he said. Gudat and his neighbors placed saw horses in their driveways, forcing sightseers to reverse back down the road.

"If they knock those saw horses over, I'm gonna turn their keys off and call the cops. Don't come here and bug people in misery," he said.

In southwestern Indiana, floodgates have been installed to keep the Wabash River from overrunning Vincennes, which was founded in 1732. Some strategic spots in the state's oldest town have been reinforced with sandbags. The weather service projected a crest on Saturday about 12 feet above flood stage, the highest in nearly 70 years.

The Grand River at Grand Rapids, Mich., which reached record levels recently has receded about 2 feet. Weather officials said it was expected to fall below flood stage Thursday, but it was unclear when the hundreds of people evacuated could return to their homes.

Tuesday, April 23, 2013

Individual cancer cells that break away from the original tumor and circulate through the blood stream are considered responsible for the development of metastases. These dreaded secondary tumors are the main cause of cancer-related deaths. Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) detectable in a patient's blood are associated with a poorer prognosis. However, up until now, experimental evidence was lacking as to whether the "stem cell" of metastasis is found among CTCs.

"We were convinced that only very few of the various circulating tumor cells are capable of forming a secondary tumor in a different organ, because many patients do not develop metastases even though they have cancer cells circulating through their blood," says Prof. Andreas Trumpp, a stem cell expert. Trumpp is head of DKFZ's Division of Stem Cells and Cancer and director of the Heidelberg Institute for Stem Cell Technology and Experimental Medicine (HI-STEM) at DKFZ. "Metastasis is a complex process and cancer cells need to have very specific properties for it. Our hypothesis was that the characteristics of cancer stem cells, which are resistant to therapy and very mobile, are best suited," says Trumpp.

Ir?ne Baccelli from Trumpp's team developed a transplantation test for experimental detection of metastasis-initiating cells. In collaboration with Prof. Andreas Schneeweiss from the National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT) Heidelberg along with colleagues from the Institute of Tumor Biology in Hamburg and the Institute of Pathology of Heidelberg University Hospitals, the researchers analyzed the blood of more than 350 breast cancer patients. Using specific surface molecules, Baccelli isolated circulating tumor cells from the blood and directly transplanted them into the bone marrow of mice with defective immune systems. "Bone marrow is a perfect niche for tumor sells to colonize," Trumpp explains. After more than one hundred transplantations, metastases actually started forming in the bones, lungs and livers of some of the animals.

This proved that CTCs do contain metastasis stem cells ? even though apparently with a low frequency. What characterizes these cells? To characterize their molecular properties, the researchers analyzed the surface molecules of those CTCs where the cell transplantation had led to metastases.

Three molecules characterize the metastasis stem cell

In a systematic screening process, Baccelli first isolated cells carrying a typical protein of breast cancer stem cells (CD44) on their surface from the CTCs. This protein helps the cell to settle in bone marrow. Next, the researchers screened this cell population for specific surface markers which help the cells to survive in foreign tissue. These include, for example, a signaling molecule that protects from attacks by the immune system (CD47) and a surface receptor that enhances the cells' migratory and invasive capabilities (MET).

Using a cell sorter, the researchers were then able to isolate those CTCs which exhibit all three characteristics (CD44, CD47, MET) at once. Another round of transplantation tests showed that these really were the cells from which the metastases originated.

Depending on the patient, cells exhibiting all three surface molecules ("triple-positive" cells) made up between 0.6 and 33 percent of all CTCs. "It is interesting that only cells with the stem cell marker CD44 carry the combination of the other two surface molecules," said Ir?ne Baccelli. "It looks like the triple-positive cells are a specialized subtype of breast cancer stem cells circulating in the blood."

Triple-positive cells as prognostic biomarkers

Are the triple-positive cells a more precise biomarker of breast cancer progression than the number of CTCs alone? In a small patient group, the researchers observed that as the disease advances, the number of triple-positive cells increases, but the total number of CTCs does not. In addition, patients with very high numbers of triple-positive cells had particularly high numbers of metastases and a much poorer prognosis than women in whom only few of these metastasis-inducing cells were detected. "On the whole, triple-positive cells seem to have a substantially higher biological relevance for disease progression than previously studied CTCs," Andreas Schneeweiss explains. The researchers plan to confirm these new results in a large study.

Andreas Trumpp considers it good news that the two proteins CD47 and MET are the ones characterizing metastasis-initiating cells. Therapeutic antibodies targeting CD47 to inhibit its functions are already being developed. A substance inhibiting the activity of the MET receptor has already been approved and shows good effectiveness for treating a certain type of lung cancer. The substance may also help breast cancer patients with detectable metastasis-inducing cells. "The triple-positive cells we have found turn out to be not only a promising biomarker of disease progression in breast cancer but also a prospect for potential new therapeutic approaches for treating advanced breast cancer," says Andreas Trumpp.

SpaceX's Grasshopper rocket sets another high mark with 820-foot hop

This SpaceX video shows the Grasshopper rocket rising 820 feet to triple its March 7 leap.

By Nancy Atkinson
Universe Today

SpaceX's Grasshopper flew 250 meters (820 feet) straight up, tripling the height flown on its previous leap. The video provides a great overhead view from SpaceX?s hexacopter.

Via?Twitter, SpaceX CEO said the Grasshopper was able to remain steady in its flight even on a windy day, hover and then land.

Grasshopper is a 10-story Vertical Takeoff Vertical Landing (VTVL) vehicle that SpaceX has designed to test the technologies needed to return a rocket back to Earth intact. While most rockets are designed to burn up in the atmosphere during re-entry, SpaceX's rockets are being designed to return to the launch pad for a vertical landing.

This is Grasshopper's fifth in a series of test flights, with each test demonstrating dramatic increases in altitude. Last September, Grasshopper flew to 2.5 meters (8.2 feet). In November, it flew to 5.4 meters (17.7 feet). In December, it flew to 40 meters (131 feet), and then 80.1 meters (262.8 feet) in March.

Grasshopper consists of a Falcon 9 rocket's first-stage tank, a Merlin 1D engine, four steel and aluminum landing legs with hydraulic dampers, and a steel support structure.

The BCS Professional Tennis Rankings - SBNation.com

Offering a methadone prescription for withdrawal from your college football habit.

Every year, we all run into an unavoidable and terrible reality: the offseason sucks. There are only so many times you can read spring practice reports and check Fulmer Cup standings before the itch starts getting to be too much. The offseason sports don't offer a whole lot of relief: hockey and basketball end in June, there are only so many World Cup qualifiers, and basebHAHAHAHAHA NOPE. While nothing will fully sate your bloodlust, it's not too much to ask for just a taste of the message-board tribalism to get you through the summer. We here at Advanced Baseline understand your plight, and have come up with a way to make the offseason suck a little less: tricking your brain just enough to make professional tennis vaguely resemble college football.

Once you get past the high-end corporate sponsorship and the foofy country-club silence between points, there's actually plenty about tennis that's similar enough to college football: massive wealth inequality! Off-court legal trouble! Reckless athletic endangerment! So why do your antibodies still reject tennis every time you haphazardly turn on Wimbledon during the Fourth of July weekend?

There are plenty of good reasons why tennis isn't a thing in the United States, but one of the biggest pieces that's missing for college football fans is what really keeps you captivated during football season: socially acceptable hate. When you spend the fall months stereotyping your conference's fan bases and doing your part to keep the bad name-based pun economy afloat, it has to be the weirdest thing to turn on the TV in the summer and seeing a crowd applaud every single point (or at the very least, not hear a single boo). An entire stadium subscribing to the NCAA's "Golly gee, both teams play so hard!" school of fandom probably makes for a healthier viewing experience, but why would you willingly sign up to eat sports broccoli? This is AMERICA, dammit, and if there's one thing we will not do, it is eat our vegetables. At least, not unless those vegetables are deep-fried, smothered in ranch dressing and Velveeta, and frosted with an insulin glaze for good measure. Let's see if we can't deep-fry tennis to make it a little more palatable.

The first thing we'll need to do is figure out who to root for. Rooting interests should resemble natural football allegiances as closely as possible, so you can tap into that limitless lava pool of emotion. Also, in order to keep the rooting interests relatively engaging, they should include a reasonable level of competitiveness from the players. If you want to get into soccer, for example, it's just not as fun if you pick a team from a fourth-tier league to watch. The right compromise for tennis is a group of 10 players -- five men, five women -- who will be representatives of your football conference in the professional tennis leagues. There aren't enough tennis players to assign at a team level, and finding a basis for those assignments is tough to do in a way that doesn't seem forced (go ahead, try and explain how that aggressive baseliner really does remind you of your favorite Air Raid variation).

This also means we will be using bowl rules for rooting interests; hold your nose and root for the conference when you're up against outsiders. Remember, this doesn't have to be perfect, only good enough to get you to Labor Day weekend.

To assign players to conferences, I went through the list of active players and first picked out all of the active professional players who either played in college or had a scholarship offer. After that, I went through the list of all active American players and assigned them an honorary college of where they would have played, based on either their hometown or active residence. From there, each player got assigned to their school's conference. If they played at a non-BCS school, they were funneled upwards according to the layout as determined by Relegation Week. (This layout also means the Big East is absorbed by the ACC entirely. It's only a matter of time before this actually happens.) Also, for competitive balance purposes, Rutgers is moved back to the Big East/ACC and Texas A&M goes back to the Big 12. Finally, the Williams sisters are excluded from this process, because that implies it could be acceptable to root against them in a conference matchup game. This is never acceptable; you should always be rooting for the Williams sisters, because they transcend regionalism and are everything that is awesome about America.

The conference teams are the top 5 active men's and women's players for each conference as determined by their Advanced Baseline rank. Behold, here are your pre-packaged teams:

First, let's be clear up front: no one on your team will win any of the Grand Slams or even a Masters/Premier tournament. Tennis is a very top-heavy sport, and unless you are a top 10 player, you will not win these tournaments. That's okay, because professional tennis is structured in a way that you can still have your cake and eat it too. Your team will be insurgent underdogs in the major events looking to make a deep run, and when they're on the regular season grind, they'll be in contention to win whatever 250-level or Challenger tournament they're playing. This is a novelty you won't find in college football- it's like watching Illinois play in the Big Ten and the MAC in the same season, because they kind of belong in both at the same time. Now, some observations on the teams themselves:

  • The men's side works out pretty well as far as balance: Each conference gets a solid contender for the high-level tournaments, a couple mid-major players who could win a Challenger or two, and a couple prospects.
  • The women's side is similarly balanced, with the exception of the Big 12. I found just one women's player born in the Mountain Time Zone in the top 500; the rest are foreign players who did a brief college stop. Seriously, get your shit together, Big 12. Until you get with the times and encourage your daughters to pursue their athletic dreams, you will never be competitive in this fictitious league I just invented.
  • Speaking of the Big 12, they also received a little competitive discretion in assigning Ryan Harrison to Texas (lives in Austin) over LSU (born in Shreveport), as well as Madison Keys to Iowa State over Iowa. I guess it's not unreasonable for such a football-centric conference to not produce a lot of tennis players, but COME ON, you're really not making this easy.
  • Similarly, while Wayne Odesnik lives in Miami and would probably be a more natural fit there, if an HGH suspension isn't grounds for an auto-switch to Florida State, I don't know what is. This also makes him the honorary Florida Man of professional tennis.

But wait, there's more! First, let's normalize the women's AB ranks so they're on the same scale as the men's. Then, we can add up the ranks of all the players in each conference to put all of this in a vaguely familiar and easily digestible form. Here are your BCS Professional Tennis Rankings:

Here is your offseason comfort food: a number-based system, derived from athletic performances, for arguing conference superiority (hopefully with a little less "LOL the computer rankings are terrible"). It gives you permission to root both for and against players, because my number needs to be higher than your number therefore GO TO HELL. It also makes conference matchups that much more compelling when they happen in tennis, because those will swing the BCS rankings the most. John Isner playing Ryan Harrison in the first round of the clay tournament in Houston? With a little imagination, you can see a Georgia/Texas Sugar Bowl. Madison Keys against Bethanie Mattek-Sands in the third round of Charleston? That's a Minnesota/Iowa State Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl, full of Midwestern heartiness transplanted to South Carolina.

Your viewing commitment to the cause is pretty flexible. You can fire up a pirate stream when your conference players are in the quarterfinals of a Challenger tournament, or you can finally watch the early rounds of the French Open with a little more investment. The last Grand Slam, the U.S. Open, runs during the first week of college football, so your only mandatory viewing coincides perfectly with your return to football. And if you actually decide to pony up the $10 to go see a match live, at least you'll have a good story about how the Tallahassee Department of Parks and Recreation was ill-equipped to accommodate your enthusiasm. Genius is never recognized in its own time, but eventually the crowd will learn to love your "S-E-C" chants in the middle of Steve Johnson's serve.

No, it's still not football. But it doesn't mean there aren't a couple storylines and characters to be found while you patiently wait out the summer months. If anything, tennis is the niche sport that not only fits your hooliganism, but probably needs it too. Nowhere is there a bigger mismatch between the insanity of the athletes who play a sport and the civility of the fans who watch it than tennis. There are two solutions to restore equilibrium: either make the athletes more civil (because that's worked so well every other time it's been tried), or make the fans more uncivil. And who is better equipped to fulfill that need than you? You have found your offseason calling. Now go forth, put on your gameday shirt, and get your hate on. The French Open starts in a month.
