New era for cancer care

THE NEWBURY and District Cancer Care Trust (NDCCT) begins a new era next month.

The Trust is to merge with the Friends of the Charles Clore Unit (FCCU) based at West Berkshire Community Hospital in Thatcham.

Chairman of the trustees for NDCCT, David Ball, said: ?By merging our resources and organisations it will allow us to better support end of life patients in West Berkshire.

?The two charities have complimentary aims and objectives and while the NDCCT focuses mainly on the support of patients in their own home, the FCCU are hospital based. We will continue to support all the work done by the FCCU at the hospital.?

The trust was established almost 30 years ago with the aim of ensuring that no one with cancer should suffer in ignorance, pain or isolation.

The FCCU was founded around seven years ago and currently has 16 volunteers who offer practical support to patients attending the hospital?s Day Therapy Unit and to the patients? carers.

They also provide patient transport to and from the hospital, equipment for the Diversional Therapist, funding for capital items needed by the unit ? ?6,100 in the recent years for specialist pumps alone ? and support for the professional staff working in the unit.

Mr Ball said of the trust: ?We?re very much a local charity for local people, providing support, care and information. The trust is able to offer support in the form of equipment loan, volunteer drivers to and from treatment centres ? wherever that centre may be ? financial grants to help with living costs in time of hardship and also provides financial support for overnight nursing care in the patients home, bereavement counselling for a patient?s family members, physiotherapy, hydrotherapy and aromatherapy.

?The Trust also provides grants to the West Berkshire community Hospital for the purchase of capital items of equipment.?

He added: ?The trust works very closely with its volunteers, with local medical professionals and with the Charles Clore Day Therapy Unit.

?Both the NDCCT and FCCU are local charities, dependent upon the support and generosity of local people. By combining our organisations under the banner of the trust we believe that we can maintain a very credible local presence that will continue to generate financial support and allow us to offer the best possible care for our patients.?

The merger is due to be complete by the end of April.
