Japan intervenes to tame soaring yen ahead of G20 (Reuters)

TOKYO (Reuters) ? Japan intervened to weaken the yen after the currency hit a record high against the dollar on Monday, saying it acted to counter speculative moves that did not reflect the health of the Japanese economy.

The dollar spiked after the intervention as much as 4 percent past 79 yen from around 75.65 yen. The dollar touched a record low of 75.31 yen earlier on Monday.

Finance Minister Jun Azumi said Tokyo stepped into the market for the second time in less than three months on its own at 10:25 a.m. local time (0125 GMT) and would continue to intervene until it was satisfied with the results.

"I have repeatedly said that we would take decisive steps against speculative moves in the market," Azumi told an ad-hoc news conference.

Azumi would not comment on the size of the intervention, but one trader said the authorities were intervening "quite persistently."

"My sense is that they might not quit very easily," a trader said. The trader added, however, that dollar/yen may start to become heavy at levels above 79 yen.

Tokyo's second foray into currency markets since its record 4.5 trillion yen selling intervention on August 4, follows weeks of warnings by government and central bank officials that their patience with the currency's strength was wearing thin.

Even though the yen's exchange rate when measured against a trade-weighted basket of currencies and adjusted for inflation is not far from its 30-year average, it has been trading at much stronger levels against the dollar than one assumed by Japanese exporters in their earnings projections.

Last Thursday, acting in part out of concern that the yen's impact on corporate profits could derail Japan's recovery from the March earthquake and tsunami, the Bank of Japan eased its monetary policy by boosting government bond purchases.

But the easing failed to take the pressure off the yen, which continued to climb against the U.S. dollar -- underpinned by investors seeking relative safety in the currency from the European debt crisis.

Yunosuke Ikeda, senior FX strategist at Nomura Securities, said last week's central bank easing and Monday's intervention could be an effective combination.

"It was very good timing. The BOJ has prepared the ground by easing last week. Speculators' yen-buying position has piled up, and intervention is most effective in such cases," Ikeda said.

"This will likely be one-off intervention, but I think the government wants to stop the yen's strength, which is out of sync with gradually improving global economic fundamentals.

"The dollar/yen will unlikely fall back to the record low hit earlier today for some time."

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda and Azumi will head to the Group of 20 summit in Cannes, France later this week and Tokyo has been keen to win its international partners' understanding for its problems with the yen.

Azumi said that while Monday's intervention was a solo act he was in a continuous contact with his international partners.

"I have been frequently in contact (with other countries) ... I have always conveyed Japan's stance and interests at senior official levels," he said.

Since September 2010, Japan has now intervened three times on its own and once jointly with other G7 rich nations to weaken the yen. But the effects of past intervention have proved fleeting in the face of steady demand from nervous investors seeking highly liquid and relatively safe assets such as Japanese government bonds.

This has been a source of deepening frustration for Japanese officials, who argue that a yen rally is one problem too many for a nation grappling with a nuclear crisis, a $250 billion post-quake rebuilding effort and ballooning debt.

NZ ship oil-pumping resumes

Bruce Anderson, Maritime New Zealand salvage manager said "it's a vessel dying"

Salvage crews have resumed pumping fuel from a stricken cargo ship listing badly on a reef off the northern coast of New Zealand.

An earlier attempt to remove the remaining fuel from the leaking Rena was abandoned a week ago due to bad weather.

Forecasts predict further poor weather for Monday night.

More than 350 tonnes of heavy fuel oil have spilled into the water already, killing more than 1,000 sea birds.

The Greek-owned and Liberian-flagged cargo ship ran aground on 5 October on Astrolabe Reef, 22km (14 miles) from Tauranga Harbour on New Zealand's North Island.

Environmentalists have warned of disaster if all 1,700 tonnes of oil and 200 tonnes of diesel held on board spill from the vessel.

End Quote Andrew Berry MNZ Salvage Unit

So far, crews have managed to pump about 34 tons of fuel from the 236-metre (775-foot) ship, according to AP news agency.

Work resumed on Sunday night, but salvage teams said the toxic fumes, thickness of the oil and the fragility of the ship meant that progress was slow.

"We will be continuing to pump oil for as long as we possibly can today," said MNZ Salvage Unit Manager Andrew Berry.

"The key point is that every drop of oil that we can get off the ship is one less drop that can potentially end up in the environment, but it will be a long, slow and steady process," he added.

The ship's hull is cracked and the ship could break up or slip from the reef at any time, experts say.

"That ship is very, very sick. She is fractured, she is broken, she is on her knees," Matt Watson of the Svitzer salvage company told Radio New Zealand, AP reports.

Oil and debris from the boat, including some shipping containers, have washed up along a 60km section of the coast and a clean-up operation is under way.

Some 1,000 people - including soldiers, wildlife experts and residents - have joined the operation and authorities say some 3,000 in total have volunteered to help.

About 1,250 sea birds have died in the spill.

An investigation is under way as to how the accident happened on a well-marked reef in calm weather.

The ship's Filipino captain and second officer have been charged over the incident.

Edmunds.com: Consumers Make Big Shift to Small Engines in the ...

SANTA MONICA, Calif. ?? Smaller engines are taking over the new car market, thanks to improved technology and a push for better fuel efficiency, reports Edmunds? AutoObserver.com, the premier online resource for automotive news and analysis. According to Edmunds.com?s data, the proportion of vehicles sold in the United States with 4-cylinder engines has climbed from 32 percent in 2007 to more than 45 percent so far this year. And in recent months, the 4-cylinder engine has made up more than 50 percent of sales, placing the smallest engines as the dominant choice in the market.

?New technology has markedly improved the power density of 4-cylinder engines, making them nearly as powerful and torque-productive as recent V6s,? says Ivan Drury, analyst at Edmunds.com. ?Ford Motor Co., for example, now has a turbocharged 2-liter 4-cylinder engine for its Explorer crossover, a vehicle that once was commonly fitted with a V8.?

One obvious benefit of smaller engines is better fuel economy, and fuel mileage in 4-cylinder engines has improved in the most recent car models. Edmunds.com data indicate that the average fuel economy for all 2012-model 4-cylinder engines is 26.6 mpg, up almost one mpg from the 25.8 mpg average in 4-cylinder engines for 2011 model year vehicles.

For more details on Edmunds.com?s small engine findings please visit http://www.autoobserver.com/2011/10/four-cylinder-engines-mpg-on-the-rise.html

Edmunds.com found evidence of the trend toward 4-cylinder engines within individual auto companies earlier this year. According to an April report by Edmunds? AutoObserver.com, the number of retail customers for all Chevrolet models opting for 4-cylinder engines climbed from 23 percent in 2007 to 46 percent through the first quarter of 2011. The numbers are especially impressive considering the disproportionate presence of full-size pickup trucks ? which have traditionally carried larger engines ? within the brand?s sales mix. The full archived report can be found on Edmunds? AutoObserver.com at http://www.autoobserver.com/2011/04/engine-downsizing-gets-real-for-ford-and-chevy.html.

The Mystery of Mars' Bizarre Plumbing

I don't know much about the geology, but could it possibly be the result of a shield volcano?

That's basically the current/default understanding - the rilles were created from subsurface flows of lava that left empty lava tubes, which collapsed leaving the rilles behind. Similar to what you see, on a much smaller scale, in places like Lava Beds on the Modoc plateau in Northern California.

This study points out that some of the rilles don't appear to really be starting or ending at identifiable volcanic vents/craters, and so they are questioning whether they are actually the result of volcanic activity. If you take a look at this photo [geosociety.org], you can sort of see what they mean. The feature pointed out with the arrows looks a lot more like a stream bed than it does a collapsed lava tube. It is hard to really form a strong opinion from the photo, though; it is difficult to tell if the feature is actually following topography like a gravity flow.

UNC hires Tulsa's Cunningham as athletic director (AP)

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. ? North Carolina has hired Tulsa athletic director Bubba Cunningham as the school's next AD.

University trustees approved the hiring in a meeting Friday morning. Cunningham's start date is Nov. 14 and his contract runs through June 2017. He will make $525,000 annually and will receive a $40,000 annual expense allowance. He can receive bonuses for average team academic performance, as well as when the football team reaches a bowl or the men's and women's basketball teams reach the NCAA tournament.

Cunningham will replace Dick Baddour, who is stepping down after 14 years amid the ongoing NCAA investigation into the football program. Chancellor Holden Thorp, who attended the trustees meeting, had said Baddour would remain on at least through the school's appearance before the NCAA infractions committee on Oct. 28.

The school had scheduled a news conference at the Smith Center to introduce Cunningham for shortly after the trustees meeting. The school said the contract agreement isn't final until all parties have signed it.

Cunningham was atop a short list of candidates forwarded to Thorp by a 13-member search committee headed by trustee Lowry Caudill. He'll inherit a 28-sport department that stands as one of the flagship programs in the Atlantic Coast Conference. He'll have the immediate job in hiring a new football coach after the abrupt firing of Butch Davis just before training camp in July, including the decision of whether interim coach Everett Withers ? who has the Tar Heels off to a 5-1 start ? should be the permanent choice.

Since Cunningham's arrival at Tulsa in 2005, the Golden Hurricane have won 34 Conference USA championships. In addition, Tulsa made a $25 million renovation to the football stadium and spent almost $10 million in construction of the Case Athletic Complex.

Cunningham is a Notre Dame graduate with a master's degree in business administration. He spent 15 years working in various roles at his alma mater before serving three years as athletic director at Ball State and then six years at Tulsa.

Can anyone beat the Packers?

andy-reid-728695-e1285344859641AP

The passing of Al Davis dominated the weekend, and rightfully so.? But the games were good enough to seize back some of the attention ? especially since the team that Davis owned has remained at the forefront of the postseason conversation by scoring a huge road win in Houston.

So what are the most interesting story lines from a Sunday that seemed a lot bigger than usual, even with six teams sitting this one out?

Here are 10 of them, as usual.

1.? Andy Reid deserves the blame in Philly.

The Eagles are 1-4.? So who gets the blame?

?There?s nobody to blame but me,? coach Andy Reid said after a 31-24 loss to the Bills.? ?I take full responsibility for it.? It?s my football team.?

He?s right.? Reid has been running the entire football operation since 1999.? This year, Reid decided to go ?all in,? taking a string of big risks ? none of which have panned out yet.

Reid decided to fire defensive coordinator Sean McDermott, explaining that McDermott just couldn?t fill the long shadow of the late Jim Johnson.? Reid decided to replace McDermott with Juan Castillo, who had been the offensive line coach for 13 years.

And so in that one string of decisions, Reid put both the defense and the offensive line at risk.? Coincidentally (or not), those are the biggest weak spots on the team.

Meanwhile, Reid signed off on a string of free-agent signings, which raised the expectations higher and higher, even though guys like running back Ronnie Brown and receiver Steve Smith didn?t really address the team?s real needs.? Team president Joe Banner did Reid no favors, telling PFT Live that the line between success and failure this year is winning the Super Bowl.

So when going ?all in? and losing, what happens?? Do you get a new pile of chips to gamble next year?? Or is there accountability for making a bad bet?

That?s what remains to be seen, especially if the Eagles fail not only to achieve that which Banner described as success, but also if the team fails to even get to the playoffs.

Though it?s believed in some league circles that the relationship between Reid and Banner and owner Jeffrey Lurie has enough strength to overcome complete failure in 2010, the fans and the media will demand that someone pay for the blunder with his job.

2.? Eagles still have a decent chance.

With a 1-4 record, the window is closing on the Eagles.? But there?s a silver lining, sort of.

In any other division, the Eagles would need to go at least 9-2 over the final 11 games to have any hope of qualifying for the postseason ? a very tall order given that they have upcoming games against the Cowboys (twice), Redskins (twice), Giants, Patriots, and Jets.

But with the Giants looking sluggish and the Cowboys stuck at 2-2 and the Redskins still believed to be overachieving, the Eagles can win the division, perhaps without winning 10 total games.? If they can win the rest of their NFC East games, and if none of the other three teams pile up wins outside the division, the Eagles could climb back into it.

It?s far from a sure thing.? But it?s a far easier proposition than if the Eagles were in the NFC North or the NFC South.? Or even the NFC West.

3.? At the bye, Kolb decision not looking too good for the Cards.

The Cardinals started the season with a closer-than-expected win over the Panthers.? But a closer-than-expected win is always better than a loss.

Since Week One, the Cards have lost four straight times, culminating in a 34-10 blowout in receiver Larry Fitzgerald?s homecoming to Minnesota.

Before Sunday?s debacle, during which the Vikings rolled to a 28-0 lead in the first quarter, Cardinals fans were grousing about the decision to trade for quarterback Kevin Kolb.? With Kolb coughing up a trio of turnovers, Cardinals fans have to be wondering whether the team?s brain trust squeezed out a brain fart.

Kolb?s passer rating of 77.2 puts him at the back of the pack, and the 1-4 record puts them in contention for Oliver Luck ? which may not be a bad thing, assuming that the coaching staff and front office can survive a disastrous final record.

The only good thing about the Kolb trade so far is the fact that his presence helped persuade receiver Larry Fitzgerald to sign a new deal.? But as the team enters its annual football-free fortnight (otherwise known as the bye week), Fitzgerald has to be wondering whether he made the right decision, and the Cardinals have to be wondering the same thing.

4.? Hue Jackson takes control in Oakland.

Yes, meticulous planning by the late Al Davis will allow his family to continue to own the Raiders.? But with son Mark Davis not expected to try to run the football operations, someone will have to take charge.

In the short term, that?s coach Hue Jackson.? During the offseason, Jackson was negotiating contracts, even before serving as head coach for a single game.? Sunday?s stirring victory necessarily gives Jackson even more juice.

If he can parlay that into a playoff appearance, who knows?? Jackson could end up with a Belichick-style arrangement, in which a personnel executive who answers to Jackson helps set the table.

Much remains to be decided in that regard.? But Jackson will only cement his status within the organization if he can continue to push a team that hasn?t been to the postseason since 2002 toward a return to glory in the season that ultimately was the last one for Al Davis.

5.? Horrible call in Carolina.

The close-but-no-cigar Carolina Panthers need to find a way to transform close losses into close wins.? They almost pulled it off on Sunday, but it would have happened with the asterisk of a very bad call.

Down by 10 midway through the third quarter, the Panthers had the ball in their own end.? Facing third down and five from the Carolina 36, quarterback Cam Newton missed receiver Legedu Naanee.

But a roughing the passer penalty extended the drive, which ultimately resulted in a touchdown that tightened the game to 23-20.? The only problem?? Saints defensive lineman Turk McBride did nothing that remotely would constitute roughing the passer.

Newton wasn?t hit with a helmet.? Newton wasn?t hit in the helmet.? Newton wasn?t hit in the neck.? Newton wasn?t hit low.? Newton wasn?t slammed to the ground.? Newton wasn?t driven to the ground.? Newton wasn?t hit by a defender who took more than one step before making contact.

In a season featuring plenty of missed roughing calls, Newton and the Panthers got a drive-extending gift.? Short of making rougher the passer subject to replay review, there?s really no way to fix this one.

Maybe the best answer is to make roughing the passer subject to replay review.

6.? It?s definitely Tebow time in Denver.

It?s time.

Yes, it?s time.

It?s Timmy Tebow time.

Coach John Fox has been stubborn, but once he inserted Tebow into Sunday?s eventual loss to the Chargers, Fox tied his own hands.? Though Tebow?s numbers weren?t spectacular (he completed four of 10 passes for 79 yards and a touchdown, and he ran six times for 38 yards and a touchdown), he gave the team a spark.? He gave the HDTV viewers a thrill.? And he gave the fans vindication for their insistence that Tebow deserves a chance.

The fans will now want that chance to continue.? They?ll want to see what Tebow can do with a chance to actually, you know, prepare to play.? They?ll expect to see him on the field after the bye week, when the Broncos go to Miami.

Fox will surely give it to Tebow.? The time has come to find out what Tebow can do.? Sink or swim, succeed or fail.? The Broncos need to know what they have ? or don?t have ? so that they can plan for a future with ? or without ? Tebow at quarterback.

7.? Running it up has its risks.

Setting aside for now the question of whether NFL teams should or shouldn?t run up the score, a decision to keep the foot on the gas during the final laps of a race that already has been won definitely has its risks.

For the 49ers, who were leading the Bucs by 38 points with fewer than five minutes to play, the risk resulted in No. 1 receiver Josh Morgan breaking an ankle.

As a result, the Niners will now have to get by without Morgan for the foreseeable future.? They?ll hope for Michael Crabtree to step up and/or Braylon Edwards to step back onto the field.? They?ll hope for that because No. 1 wideouts aren?t exactly hanging around.

What?s that?? Randy Moss?? Terrell Owens?? Unlikely, and likely unwise.

Almost as unwise as keeping Josh Morgan in a 41-3 game.

8.? Bengals should trade Carson, but not yet.

In rookie Andy Dalton, the Cincinnati Bengals have found their quarterback of the future.? And their quarterback of the present.

So what should they do about their quarterback of the past?

Some fans are suggesting that the Bengals should now be willing to trade Carson Palmer, and that they should do so before next week?s trade deadline.? But they won?t get nearly what they could by cobbling a trade together now.

Instead, they should wait until the offseason, at which time teams will be making their plans at the position for 2012.? Anyone who trades for Palmer at that point would have the benefit of a full offseason and preseason to get him ready to go, and the Bengals would get one or more picks from the same draft for which they?d get picks now.

Patience, then, is the key.? Come March, someone who needs a quarterback but who isn?t in position to draft Andrew Luck or trade for him will consider making a play for Palmer.

9.? Is Del Rio close to being done?

The Jaguars opened the season with a win over the Titans.? Since then, the Jags have lost four in a row.? With the Steelers, Ravens, and Texans coming up, the Jaguars could be 1-7 at the bye.

And 1-7 could be good enough to get coach Jack Del Rio fired.

Or could it?? Del Rio entered the season without starting quarterback David Garrard, cutting him and in turn saving owner Wayne Weaver a whopping $8 million.? If Del Rio actually wanted to keep Garrard but ultimately agreed to go along with a move that the front office and/or ownership wanted to make, Del Rio possibly could have gotten himself at least until the end of the 2011 season.

Heck, Del Rio may have even gotten himself a full offseason to develop quarterback Blaine Gabbert.

10.? The ?Suck for Luck? update.

After five weeks, the Colts have the inside track on the first pick in the draft (and thus the rights to Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck), thanks to a Chiefs team that has beaten two winless teams in consecutive weeks.

But the Colts continue to come close to winning, and there?s a sense they eventually will have success.

The Dolphins and Rams, on the other hand, don?t have quite the same prospects.? Miami specifically seems poised to slide into the worst ? and thus best ? position, given the loss of quarterback Chad Henne for the balance of the season and upcoming games against the Jets (twice), Bills (twice), Pats, Cowboys, Redskins, Eagles, Giants, and Raiders.

With only three winless teams remaining, the one-win teams soon will be in play, with the Jaguars, Cardinals, Vikings, and Panthers possible candidates.? (In theory, even the Eagles could be in the mix.)

Regardless of how it all plays out, the teams that lose hope will find hope in the quest for a clear shot at Andrew Luck ? or at the bushel of draft picks that he could potentially generate.

Casey Anthony dons wig in deposition

Disguised in huge sunglasses and a baseball cap, Casey Anthony was deposed Saturday for a civil lawsuit that accuses her of ruining another woman's reputation.

Attorneys for Zenaida Gonzalez used videoconferencing to question Anthony, who was at an undisclosed location in Florida.

John Morgan, who is representing Gonzalez, said he asked Anthony about the disappearance of her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee. Anthony told detectives in 2008 that Caylee had been kidnapped by a nanny named Zenaida Gonzalez.

Detectives said no such baby sitter existed. Morgan's client, who has the same name as the fictional baby sitter, has sued Anthony, claiming her reputation was ruined.

Anthony answered few questions and her attorney, Charles Greene, repeatedly invoked the Fifth Amendment, Morgan said. The Fifth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution protects witnesses from being forced to incriminate themselves.

"I think there were times where some of the questions irritated her," Morgan said, pointing to questions about her mother and father, and her brother's testimony.

Morgan said Anthony tried to disguise herself by wearing a Philadelphia Phillies baseball cap and long, thick black hair that appeared to be from a wig. She also wore a large pair of Dolce and Gabbana sunglasses, Morgan said.

He described her as "not happy to be there."

Morgan told The Orlando Sentinel that Anthony was breathing deeply and her nostrils were flaring during the deposition.

"I believe after all these years in my life I can read body language: She did not want to be there. [She was] clearly annoyed, but composed and courteous," he told the Sentinel.

A message left for Greene by The Associated Press on Saturday after the deposition was not immediately returned.

Anthony was acquitted of killing Caylee and released from jail in July. She is now serving probation on an unrelated charge at an undisclosed location in Florida.

DeMarco: Wise Rangers making all the right moves

Ownership stabilization, offseason moves made Washington's team better than last year's

Image: Texas Rangers v Seattle MarinersGetty Images

Rangers general manager Jon Daniels says manager Ron Washington "takes on the character of the manager, and he has been perfect for this team."

OPINION

Tony DeMarco

While the Yankees and Tigers battled through a tight, five-game first-round series (with the Tigers advancing Thursday night), the Texas Rangers sat home and wait.

Take that as another measure of how far they've come since the 2010 postseason.

Owner/president Nolan Ryan hasn't shied away from saying he believes this Rangers team is better than last year's American League pennant winner. And he's right.

These aren't the same Rangers who entered last postseason with a history full of doubts. At that point, they had never won a pennant in their half-century of existence ? just three division titles in the late-1990s.

They had never won a postseason series, and their record in three ALDS appearances ? all against the Yankees ? was 1-9.

Last October, the Rangers franchise was only two months removed from a bankruptcy case and ownership change, and seven months earlier their manager admitted to a one-time cocaine use slip-up that stained his reputation, if not threatened his job security.

But look at the Rangers now:

Their 96 regular-season wins were a club record, and marked the first time in franchise history they reached the 90-win mark in consecutive years.

The ownership stabilization has led to a payroll bump-up to near the $100-million mark from just under $70 million, where it had been stuck in neutral for five seasons.

That didn't prevent free-agent Cliff Lee from bolting to Philadelphia last winter, but what the Rangers didn't spend on Lee they used for a series of key acquisitions led by Adrian Beltre ? or should we say, after ALDS Game 4 in Tampa, Bel-trey.

After that three-homer game, Beltre said about his choice last winter, "From my point of view, Texas gave me the best chance to put a ring on my finger, and I am just two steps away from it.''

Interesting, since he played last season for the Red Sox, who chose to pay for Carl Crawford and Adrian Gonzalez instead.

As for the Rangers' next step, they already have dismissed the AL team with the best rotation ? the Rays ? and did it fairly easily in four games.

Along the way, they conquered David Price and James Shields ? the latter who had been very successful against them ? and exposed the bullpen weakness that Rays manager Joe Maddon masterfully kept to a minimum during the regular season.

So other than the possibility of a couple of Justin Verlander starts, there's little left to fear for the Rangers when it comes to opposing AL starting pitchers.

And besides, even without Lee, the Rangers' rotation is strong enough that they could afford to move Alexi Ogando back to the bullpen, setting up the postseason's most-dominant late-inning combination of options for manager Ron Washington.

You can point to the Rangers' losing regular-season records against the Tigers (3-6) and Yankees (2-7), but all but three of those games were played before the midseason deals for Koji Uehara, Mike Gonzalez and Mike Adams that transformed the Rangers' bullpen.??

This group will shut you down with strikeout stuff in the late innings, and it's no wonder Washington isn't questioned so much anymore about his handling of the bullpen. In fact, after signing a two-year extension last winter, Washington apparently is in line for another.

"I love the guy,'' general manager Jon Daniels said about Washington earlier this week. "A team takes on the character of the manager, and he has been perfect for this team. There are a lot of great managers who do different things well, but how many managers really inspire their players? How many truly inspire them and get them to play beyond their abilities? That's what Wash does.''

One look at the Rangers' stolen-base totals ? two players with 30-plus, three others in double figures ? tells you this isn't the one-dimensional slugging lineup of the late-1990s. But that's not to say they still don't mash home runs.

Adding Beltre and Mike Napoli has cranked up the power so much that 2010 AL MVP Josh Hamilton finished fifth in this lineup in home runs despite playing 121 games. That's right, fifth: Beltre and Ian Kinsler (32), Napoli (30) and Nelson Cruz (27) hit more.?

During the regular season, the Rangers offense led the majors in batting average (.283), was second in slugging percentage (.460) and third in runs with 855.

Then they dismissed Tampa Bay despite Elvis Andrus, Michael Young and Cruz contributing next to nothing offensively ? a combined 5-for-44 with no RBI.

"There's no question about it,'' said postseason whiz Colby Lewis, who is 4-0-1.67 after beating Tampa Bay in the critical Game 2. "We're a better team (than last year).''

Focus on the Family Community: Relationships and Marriage: Very ...

I don't really know where to begin... 5 yrs ago my husband and I sold our business. It was very profitable and being in our mid 30's we should have been set for life. My husband had worked so very hard for the 10 years that we owned the business. He did the work of 3 men and nothing stood in the way of his work. Workaholic does not even touch on the amount of hours he put in. Over time, he began to resent me and our children for being home. We had the means to do various things, but he would never leave the business. He missed birthdays, anniversaries, family gatherings, almost all social activities. I stopped pursuing friendships as I always felt that I was letting people down if we were invited somewhere and I had to always say "no". He would lay huge guilt trips if the kids and I did anything that made it so that we were "having a life" while he worked his fingers to the bone and sacrificed himself for the family. It never mattered that we could have done some things differently and that he didn't have to work like that. The kids and I attended church weekly and though at one point he did accept Jesus, he has never intentionally followed Him. He has made sure that our kids attended Christian private schools and stressed how we needed to be good people, but it was like it never applied to him.

When we sold our business and moved to a new city. He took 2 yrs off. He was adamant that I go back to work IMMEDIATELY once we moved. I had worked on and off during the years. I love to work and am very diligent and hard working. We have twin sons that have severe dyslexia and other learning differences. I spent all of their childhood advocating for them in school and trying to find a better way for them to be educated. My husband found it frustrating when he needed me to do things for him during his work schedule that he would have to wait for me to finish my work day. We decided I would stay home. Everything that I did revolved around supporting him in his work and making sure he had everything he needed the minute he needed it. Or he would be really mad.

During his 2 yrs off he had a 1 night stand and started to gamble. I was not aware that this was happening at the time. I had gone to work full time as he resented the years he had worked and said that I had done nothing. While I worked, I still advocated for our sons with disabilities, made sure our younger daughter had what she needed and took care of everything in the home. Cooking, cleaning, shopping, etc. At the end of the 2 yrs he decided to buy another company that was in a different community. By then I knew about the one night stand and he had been so broken up about it and confessed it to me and seemed genuinely remorseful. I was concerned about buying the business and did not feel that it was a wise decision. But it was what he wanted to do and did his best to assure me that everything would be okay. During this time my sister was battling cancer and lived 11 hours away by car. I made as many trips to see her as I could as she had 3 younger children. I needed to cram a lifetime of visits into a very short amount of time. My sister died a year after we bought the business and I found out 2 weeks after her death that my husband was having an affair and had been living in the other community basically as if he was single. He still strung me along though. Now, 3 yrs later, we have closed the other business and his gambling has cost us almost all of our savings. He says that he is the one that worked so hard and it's his money and that the only reason I am with him is for the money. (we dated in high school and stayed together, he had nothing in high school, so try another one!) I feel like I have tried to love him through so much. I used to feel such terrible guilt for being the Christian and wanting to get out of this dysfunctional marriage. We are in complete limbo. Depending on what day it is, he loves me, but if I stand up and call him on the garbage, or confront him about the gambling, he just gets mad and walks away. He has said that he is willing to go for counseling, but he has completely emotionally checked out. We are sleeping in separate rooms and this doesn't even bother him. I flip flop back and forth between wanting to run as fast as I can the other direction and saving our marriage. I feel like I wasted my youth and now at 40 have little means to walk away. So confused!

Five Things A Non-Profit Should Know About Creating a Grant ...

Most non-profits depend on a variety of funding sources to help them carry out their mission. A primary method of raising revenue is through grant seeking.

Grant proposals do not just happen; they are created and it is a process.

This process includes identifying the problem, designing and developing the program to address the solution, researching funding sources, analyzing grant application guidelines before finally creating the grant proposal.

Successful Non-profits Operate With a Mission

This mission is the guiding principle of the organization. This is what drives the organization.? Whether it is helping the homeless, building houses for the elderly or providing services to the poor, each non-profit is working to address a specific problem. To do this, staff and volunteers work together to determine what the needs are and how they plan to address the problem.? It is important that these services be consistent and that all of the services ? and those served- are documented. This information will be requested in your grant proposal.

Do your Research. A Perfect Match Matters

As part of the non-profit develops and carries out program services, the grant staff will be researching various grant opportunities. Each grant is different and all grants have specific rules and requirements. Typically it falls to the grant staff to research the various regulations and determine if the grant is a match for the program the nonprofit is operating.

Follow the Rules. Accuracy is the Key

Once the non-profit has determined that it is appropriate to apply for the funding, the grant team will craft the proposal. It is essential that the non-profit follow the grant makers rules to the letter. Often, there are so many more requests for the limited grant funds that it is necessary for the non-profit to make sure that they do everything they can to make it through the review process.

Tell a Story

Non-profits use these applications to tell their story. A non-profit wants to use this opportunity to share their successes and illustrate how the use of these funds, if received, will help further the mission of not only the non-profit but the funding source as well.

Know What You Need. Be Solution Oriented

Non-profit fundraising works hand in hand with all of the departments to provide a comprehensive, cohesive approach to meet the mission of the non-profit. The process of creating proposals starts with the foundation of the organization and the problem it wants to address. As the non-profit devises the program and services they are using to help solve the problem, they are careful to track services they are providing and those they are providing service to. The non-profit engages in ongoing research to find appropriate funding sources with the same interests and aims. Once a funder is identified, a proposal is created that meets all of the grant requirements of the funder.? This is the most important part of the whole process and the most difficult. When it is successful, non-profits form an ongoing relationship that is mutually beneficial to the non-profit and the people they serve as well as the funder who is trying to further their own mission and goals by donating to non-profits across the globe.

Switch to Cleaner Sources of Energy Like Wind Power And Solar ...

With decreasing quantities of commonly used energy sources it is essential that the world now shift its focus to renewable sources of energy. These forms of energy does not only cut down the energy cost but also help to prevent further deterioration of the environment. Sun is the largest source of energy and all kinds of renewable sources of energy are directly or indirectly linked to solar energy. Solar Lighting, biomass and Wind Power are some of the commonly used forms of solar energy. With countries across the world developing and investing on schemes to harness solar energy using these for household uses is no more an impossible task.

Solar Lighting- an eco friendly option-

Solar Lighting work by harnessing the energy of the sun and with technological advancement many feasible options are now easily available in the market. Earlier one may have worried about the fact that these will not match with their artistic d?cor, but with new designs this is no more a problem. These lights can be used to effectively light up any space and depending on the intended usage on can purchase from the vast number of available options. Mechanical sensor automatically turns on the outdoor light when the need for lighting appears.

Easy installation and an uninterrupted back-up even in case of a power failure have further increased the popularity of Solar Lighting; though, the biggest advantage of these lights continues to be the environmental benefit. Sun is a source of abundant energy and most importantly it is renewable. The saving on the electricity bills in the long run makes this kind of lighting a smart investment. With more and more money being spend by leading economies the operating costs will definitely be further reduced making it more feasible.

Wind Power- an excellent manner to harness solar energy-

Wind is another form of solar energy which has been put to effective use since long. There are many countries in the world toady which are investing huge sums on wind farms and this investment has already been paid off by the huge production of energy. Wind Power is one of the cleanest sources of energy and there is no emission of gases or unwanted wastes during the entire operation. The modern technology makes it very easy to capture the wind energy and put it down to maximum usage.

Planned and detailed planning can help Wind Power to become the main source of energy especially in areas which are located in favorable geographical locations to do so. Wind turbines can be easily installed and help meet if not complete, a substantial part of the energy demand. Wind Power is ample and with no negative effects on the environment it can be used as an energy source for a cleaner future.

Solar energy can provide with the right energy solutions for large industries as well as small household. Individuals and nations can not only cut expenditure using these forms of energy but also do their bit to contribute to a pollution free environment.
