Google alerting webmasters running older WordPress versions on their sites!

We recently received an automated email from the Google Search Quality Team alerting us that we were running an outdated version of WordPress on one of our domains.

Google has been offering such functionality for a while now alerting web publishers registered on Google Webmaster Central about out of date software and other potential security issues. But this was our first.

The message stated:

Your site appears to be running an older version of WordPress. Google recommends that you update to the latest release. Older or unpatched software may be vulnerable to hacking or malware that can hurt your users. To download the latest release, visit the WordPress download page.

It also links to an old post on the Google Webmasters blog which talks about this feature.
