Dr. Linda Janowitz checks a dog at the Peninsula Society & SPCA September 14, 2005 in San Mateo, California. The dog is one of about 1,000 expected to be flown to the Bay Area from New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina separated them from their owners.

People thinking about adding a dog or cat to the family might want to go check out more than a few fuzzy faces this weekend.

The ASPCA and Petfinder.com ? an online database of adoptable pets ? put together what might be the largest somewhat coordinated adopt-a-pet event in the history of online databases. Where are those Guinness record people now?

Dubbed the Big Birthday Adoption Event ? marking Petfinder.com?s 15th anniversary ? it involves 1,500 shelter and rescue groups across North America running a weekend-long adopt-a-pet program in hopes of placing 15,000 animals in permanent homes.

The local puppy-love fest takes place from noon-6 p.m., July 15-17, at the Dallas SPCA location, 362 S. Riverfront Blvd.?

Wait, three days at six hours each comes out to 18 hours, not 15. Still, it?s for a great cause so we?ll allow it.

In the immortal words of pet rescue and adoption volunteers everywhere: Please adopt, don?t buy. Puppy mills suck, and adopted dogs are amazingly grateful. Spay or neuter pets so the homeless pet population shrinks, and don?t let ?em out for unsupervised outdoor visits.

We now return to regularly scheduled programming.
