Jewel pens song for breast cancer survivors

Singer Jewel

Singer Jewel has written plenty of songs about life, love and heartbreak, and has helped plenty of women through hard times. But this time, a song she wrote is meant to help women through another battle.

?Jewel's latest song, ?Flower,? was written to raise awareness about the importance of breast reconstruction options for breast cancer survivors,? said Stacey Plaisance, with the Associated Press. ?The singer is heading to New Orleans next month to perform ?Flower? and other hits at a benefit concert for the cause.?

According to BraDayUSA.org, 100 percent of the proceeds from the song will go toward the Breast Reconstruction Awareness Fund of The Plastic Surgery Foundation. The money will be used for the care of breast reconstruction patients and breast reconstruction-related research, the website says.

Jewel told the Associated Press that many breast cancer survivors are not informed about their reconstruction options, and that she was surprised by that.

"When I was writing this song, there were a lot of survivors that came to mind and I'm always continually amazed at how resilient women are, and how when faced with a difficult position they find the courage to say, 'I am going to fight on and I'm even going to be better.' And that's what really made me write this song," Jewel said.

Jewel has been staying busy. The 38-year-old singer recently wrote That?s What I?d Do, her first children?s picture book. On her website, she quotes a line from the book: "'Cause you are a treasure / Better than gold. And best of all / You are the kind that I can hold."

The book will be out later in September.

Jewel recorded a public service announcement for awareness of breast reconstruction surgery, which will air on Lifetime. The song is available for download now on iTunes and Amazon. Tickets for the New Orleans concert go on sale Friday.
